I think the author is W. G. Sebald. Austerlitz was amazing for me, one of the most amazing books I have read in my life. I have a review as well.
I read this, and The Emigrants this year, and also felt that they were two of the best books I have ever read - certainly two of the best contemporary novels. Amazing. Incredibly subtle, but the emotional impact sneaks up on you. Very powerful.
Easily one of the best novels of the 2000's.If you like Sebald check this out...

That article is really interesting! The Rings of Saturn is on to-read list! But I don't want to blow through everything he's written too quickly. I want to savor him a bit. It's always sad when you've read everything a really amazing author has written.
