I won't make a nomination, so. This'll do me.

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) I got my wish this month, so I'm not going to make a nomination. Looking forward to seeing everyone else's nominations this month.

Archangel looks like a serious contender though....

Jackie Walsh | 10 comments Have only read one book by Robert Harris (Enigma) and loved that so happy enough to third the Archangel nomination!

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm liking the response to Archangel. Fingers crossed!

message 5: by Dem (new)

Dem Love books set in Russia! so this nomination good for me.

Paul (taytothief) Just so I can get my patriot hat on, I'm going to suggestNew Irish Short Stories. I think there should be a lot more Irish authors and books supported in this group.
Afaik, you can pick this up fairly handy too. Is in tesco for €10 and €9something on kennys.ie

s e n t i m e n t a l i t i e s olittlebear (olittlebear) I agree the Irish Readers group should lean towards reading works by Irish authors a bit more, but there's also so much other good stuff out there. Possible to read two books a month or is that pushing it for most ?

message 8: by Keith (new)

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) Wouldn't mind a possible quarterly Irish Book on top of the normal Book of the Month. I very rarely read Irish authors but it's something I'd like to change....would be really interested in some Roddy Doyle.

I can recommend A Star Called Henry or Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.

s e n t i m e n t a l i t i e s olittlebear (olittlebear) I feel a bit like the monthly read shouldn't need to have Irish nominations aswell if we're doing an Irish author book anyway.. I mean the amount of authors who aren't Irish > Irish authors. Y'know ? That's just me though..

Paul (taytothief) Vicki wrote: "I agree Keith, a quarterly Irish Author read would be great, but feel free to recommend Irish Authors for the Monthly reads also. It will be decided by Poll anyway. Does anyone want to get the ball rolling on a quarterly Irish Author read keith or declan maybe???? "

Interesting. Any particular reason you're restricting the the choosing of books to two people in a group of 121?

message 12: by Keith (new)

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) I think Vicki meant would myself or Declan lead the discussion (organise the poll etc.) Andy did it for the April read, and Vicki did it for the March read. Share the work out among everyone.

I don't mind getting the first quarterly Irish read off the ground, but if anyone else really wants to do it, thats not a problem either.

I would like to put forward spitting on a soldiers grave, it’s not by an Irish author but it’s about Irish History.Spitting on a Soldier's Grave: Court Martialed After Death, the Story of the Forgotten Irish and British Soldiers

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Strumpet City and Star of the Sea are two of the best Irish novels I've ever read. Both are historic fiction and I think every Irish person should read both. I'm not putting them forward just yet, as I'd like to read Archangel.

s e n t i m e n t a l i t i e s olittlebear (olittlebear) Well I do believe this is why someone needs to create a new page for the Irish read noms. :) Bring on the books. So long as no one else here goes to my local library. ^_^ btw, since it's only early April, will we still get to read an Irish one now or have to wait till next month (booooo.)?

message 16: by Keith (new)

Keith Kelly (nedkelly) Ok...Irish Reads nominations are now open in our new "Quarterly Irish Reads" folder. Get nominating guys.

And don't forget to nominate a book on this thread also. Still only two nominations for May as far as I can see.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

We'll have to close this soon to give readers time to vote and buy the book before May. I think Friday is as good as any other day for this, too.

message 18: by Paul (last edited Apr 24, 2011 08:20AM) (new)

Paul (taytothief) Is the poll for this made? Or am I missing something here? Do you mean next Friday?

Edit: Oh, I found the poll, nvm. You should probably put a link to the poll in this thread or send a message to the group members about it. (Though, thats only of you want to involve everyone in the group ofc.)

message 19: by Paul (new)

Paul (taytothief) Vicki wrote: "Hi Paul, I messaged the 133 members about the poll last Friday, I dont understand why you havent got it. We can start putting a link to the poll on the nom thread when its done for future reads. This is only our third read so we're learning as we go along. Thanks for the suggestion. always welcome "

Ok, don't remember getting a message but thanks for letting me know.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't want to moan, but I was away for a few days and didn't have access to the internet so I didn't get a chance to vote.

Also my nomination was not on the poll so can I put it forward for June?

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Vicki wrote: "Hi Sam, what was your nomination? I could only see two for May and a few suggestions in the thread for the Irish Author quarterly read. Please accept my apologies I just read back over the threads ..."

Thanks Vicki, it would be good if you could put it forward for next month.

Looking forward to reading this one. I read Ghost and enjoyed it so hopefully this one will be just as fast paced.

Vicki wrote: "Thats great Andrew, I went to my usual haunt today to buy it and they didnt have it in stock, going to have to go and pay full wack for it or get it online. Cant wait to start it"

Get it from the Book Depository that's where I got my copy and it was only €5.75.

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew M | 4 comments You should surely pick it up 2nd hand in Cork Vicki - been out for ages! I promise its worth it.
