They can't all be 5✫ reads ~ unfortunately

We're always mentioning our favorites, but since they can't all be 5✫ ... what are your 1✫ Wonders? If you don't rate 1✫, do you have 2✫ reads? Or those that are best forgotten?

message 2: by Josie (last edited Apr 06, 2011 03:20AM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Overall I only have one 1✫ read and four 2✫ reads (which surprised me) although I do have a couple of DNF so if I'd rated those they probably would've bumped up those figures.

This year my 1✫ read was Fallen. It wasn't good for me.
I've also just finished Dark Prince which I rated 2✫. I'm not a huge PNR reader at the best of times but when I read one I want to feel all tingly not be constantly rolling my eyes.

message 3: by Zaanodes (new)

Zaanodes | 804 comments The Tender Stranger and The Big Bamboo so far.

The Big Bamboo was sooooo stuuuupid, I don't think I actually read it as much as skimmed it. I could stand the damn thing!!!

I save my ☆ and my ★★★★★ for those rare books so I don't have many of either.

I didn't realize that I had over 5 pages of unrated! Wow! I am going to have to just do a 'gut reaction' rating because some of them I read YYYEEEAAARRRSSS ago!!

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 145 comments I went back through my books and found I had a lot that were two stars-okay but not great. I seem to reserve one stars for anthologies where only one of the novellas in the book appealed to me. I hated Inked, nothing in that one appealed. The only story in Dead After Dark that I liked was Ward's "Story of Son." I really disliked Wuthering Heights, Dogs and Goddesses, James and the Giant Peach, and The Twenty-One Balloons. And I absolutely loathed All That Glitters even though I usually enjoy Linda Howard.

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Apparently I have more 1-★ ratings than 5-★ ones. Go figure. Books that feel like assisted suicide are given the great honor of being 1-★. *shudder* I've also rated a lot of DNF books 1-★. I rarely read another book by an author with that rating.

Here are some that give me nightmares:

Strange Candy by Laurell K. Hamilton Relentless (Federation Chronicles, #2) by Lauren Dane The Cat (Sons of Destiny, #5) by Jean Johnson Jailbait by Lesléa Newman Promises Reveal (Promises, #4) by Sarah McCarty Evermore (The Immortals, #1) by Alyson Noel Stargazer (Evernight, #2) by Claudia Gray Nicholas (The Lords of Satyr, #1) by Elizabeth Amber Wolf Tales I by Kate Douglas Confessions of a Video Vixen by Karrine Steffans When Blood Calls (The Shadow Keepers, #1) by J.K. Beck (<---that one has the honor of being my most "voted" review on GR. I should rant more often)

message 6: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Thankfully the only one I've read from that list is Evermore. Completely agree with you, utter garbage. I'll make a note to steer clear of the rest ;)

message 7: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I have quite a few I have DNFed and then did not rate, so I won't include those.

Seized by Love (Russian series/Kuzan Family series, #1) by Susan Johnson Cover of Night by Linda Howard If Looks Could Chill (Passion For Danger, #2) by Nina Bruhns The Black Dahlia (L.A. Quartet #1) by James Ellroy Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

message 8: by Mariya (last edited Apr 06, 2011 01:22PM) (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments 1-2 STARS = DNF BOOKS

Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie Wicked Enchantment (Dark Magick, #1) by Anya Bast The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter Wings (Wings, #1) by Aprilynne Pike Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1) by C.C. Hunter Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh Tiger's Curse (Tiger Saga, #1) by Colleen Houck Angel Star (Angel Star, #1) by Jennifer Murgia Night Myst (Indigo Court, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn Firespell (Dark Elite, #1) by Chloe Neill

I don't even know if this is it. I rarely continue wit the series wit 2 stars, I guess you could say two stars b/c I'm being too nice. but to me 1-2 stars are just bad book/ you've lost me.

outta all them I'd say I may start Unholy Ghosts wasn't as bad, it's just I couldn't understand WTF was going on in the book. I was lost.

message 9: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 06, 2011 03:45PM) (new)

How could you possibly one-star anything with THIS title Tiger's Curse (Tiger Saga, #1) by Colleen Houck ? Pure gold. I note with interest it's followed by tiger's quest and tiger's voyage. Quest and voyage, both very important stages in the life of the tiger.

And oh god I've finally found someone else who one-stars Gena Showalter. I haven't had the courage to brave the incensed hordes that will slay me for dumping on the Lords of the Underworld but this has inspired me.

JB Ward's Fallen Angel series is a huge 1-star for me.

message 10: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I gave LoTu 2 stars.

message 11: by Mariya (last edited Apr 06, 2011 04:25PM) (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments @Moss: have you even read Tiger's Curse? I was being nice wit TC wit the two stars, it should be 1 stars. It read like a child had written it to me, I skimmed through half the book, The couple was even childish though I liked the couple a bit, but it was definitely not 4-5 star quality. but, we all have our opnions, my BFF YA maniac liked it and we usually like most of the same books. If I had bought the Tiger's Curse I would've been PISSED!

if a books bores me 1 star, 1 star, 1 star! and that's what LOFU did to me. I would bleep it wit 1 star a million times. I'm sorry couldn't like it.

message 12: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32827 comments LOL @ Moss! Never fear, my dear. Those that enjoy LoTU, me included, will never bash ya for your opinion. In fact, this thread was inspired by some 1-2✫ ratings I've seen for books I've really enjoyed.

As much as I love hearing someone enjoyed a book I did, I also like to hear opposing thoughts on them.

I tend to be a high rater, I only have 2 1✫ which were:
Grave Sight (Harper Connelly, #1) by Charlaine Harris Tainted Blood (Marquis de Sade) by Mary Ann Mitchell

I have a few more 2✫, those were:
Luck of the Wolf (Historical Werewolf, #7) by Susan Krinard Allegra Fairweather Paranormal Investigator by Janni Nell A Quick Bite (Argeneau, #1) by Lynsay Sands Dead Girls Are Easy (Nicki Styx, #1) by Terri Garey Touched by a Vampire Discovering the Hidden Messages in the Twilight Saga by Beth Felker Jones The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (Sleeping Beauty, #1) by Anne Rice Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz The Last Vampire (Hunger, #2) by Whitley Strieber The Next A Novel by Dan Vining V2 B4 by G.L. Giles The Vampire Within The Beginning by Drew Silver

The last four 2✫ and both my 1✫ are pre-GR and way pre-easy-to-find PNR/UF reads. I was grabbin' anything that sounded remotely interesting and ended up grabbin' a bunch crap.

I have read one more Argeneau since the first and it was better. I'm sure the narrator, who's voice drove me batty, had a lot to do with my low rating. And, I've determined that series is one that I have to be in the mood for before picking up.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Steph: Oh that's so interesting...some really high profile reviewer (I think it may be the smart bitches, but don't hold me to it..) just LOVE the Blue Bloods series. I was going to try it on the strength of their rec but might hold off based on yours.

@Mariya: No, I have not read Tiger's Curse.

@Regina: One more and we can form a coven!

message 14: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32827 comments You may enjoy it, Moss. I know a lot of people have, but it just wasn't for me.

message 15: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I've only given 2 books 1 star, but there are some that are DNF which may have ended up with that rating.

Bon Bon Voyage (A Culinary Mystery with Recipes, #9) by Nancy Fairbanks Upgrading by Simon Brooke

LotU doesn't float my boat either! My 2 stars are pretty broad, some I would read more of that author, some not. Series I probably won't continue:
The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, #1) by Gena Showalter Minion (Vampire Huntress Legend, #1) by L.A. Banks Bone Song (Tristopolis, #1) by John Meaney Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely, #2) by Melissa Marr

message 16: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32827 comments Minion is one of my DNFs. Just couldn't get into it.

message 17: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments How to narrow this down? Hmm. My angry fist-shaking one ✫ Wonders:

Danse Macabre (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #14) by Laurell K. Hamilton The Harlequin (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #15) by Laurell K. Hamilton The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova Kissing Sin (Riley Jenson Guardian, #2) by Keri Arthur Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick Night Shift (Jill Kismet, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow The Struggle (Vampire Diaries Series #2) by L.J. Smith Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter The First Death by Laurell K. Hamilton Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Prophecy of the Sisters (Prophecy of the Sisters, #1) by Michelle Zink Bullet (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #19) by Laurell K. Hamilton Crimson Wind (Horngate Witches, #2) by Diana Pharaoh Francis

Sorry, I only managed to get it down to 12. Any shorter and I'd've popped the throbbing vein in my head from just looking at these again. And now scrolling through some of my 2s, I'm eager to downgrade them to 1s.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not reading Hush Hush on principle after Fitzpatrick's blog post, but it's soothing to see someone didn't like the book quite apart from that. I never got into the Anita Blake series either.

message 19: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Fitzpatrick's blog post? Was that the one about bad reviews/writing on an author's book? Or a different one?

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, the 'Be Nice' post.

message 21: by Zaanodes (new)

Zaanodes | 804 comments I just finished a book that I gave 2 stars. The idea was really promising, which is why I gave it 2. Otherwise, 1 to 0 stars.

The Ghost Hunter, a Paranormal Romance

May I ask what the blog said that has you not reading a book on principle?

message 23: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Here is the blog post, Zaanodes.

http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_...

There was a huge argument in the comments and people deleted their posts and in one case their whole GR account.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Dammit I just wrote a huge comment and lost it all.

Zaanodes, basically she advises people who want to be published against writing bad reviews because that sort of thing 'burns bridges'. There's also a truly objectionable story about how she takes the 'high moral road' over not giving out an author blurb to someone who reviewed H/H badly. There were comments supporting her, but I fall into the group of people who think it reads like a bizarre, clumsily chummy attempt at intimidation. Not a great starting point for reading any book, especially if I have to 'Be Nice' about it (in the interests of accuracy I suppose I only need to be nice if I want a book published. Should I not aspire to anything like, the corollary has to be that I can shit all over it without fear of retribution.)

lolol That is just too funny!!

message 27: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 634 comments I don't think I've ever rated a book 1 or 2 stars. That said I've recently changed from just giving marks out of 5 to rating separately on plot, characters, ending, enjoyment and cover so there's less chance of me making impulse ratings. The worst book I've read this year is Generation Dead, but even that was 3 stars.

message 28: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32827 comments Wow! Writers and reviewers have been on a roll recently, yah? Seems to be the year for it. Thanks for sharing the post.

@Nairabell, I like your new review style. It's a great was to show your thoughts on more than just the story. :)
