SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

Has anyone noticed that you sometimes like/enjoy the books where the author mentions a song or band that you like in the story better than one that has one that you don't so much care for? I'm not entirely sure this is making any sense, but I can't think of any other way to word it right now.

I get what you mean. I'm pretty removed from the US/English music scene, so sometimes pop over to You Tube to check out the songs. Usually, I do that afterwards, so it hasn't made much of a difference in my book-enjoyment. It has been fun to find some new things I like, though!

Ditto on the removed from US music scene. But, I've noticed that KMM and some others will post, either on their website or elsewhere, songs that they either listened to while writing the book or songs that fit scenes in their books. That's pretty cool.

Does anyone listen to music whilst they read?

I'm usually reading in the evening while everyone else is watching TV...or enjoying the silence when they're all out! But, do make sure something is on when I'm cleaning...driving...

I agree with this. The mentioning of a song is for something, not just some random fact the author wrote for fun. It tries to convey something, a feeling or emotion through the lyrics or the music itself.

so when a song that I know it's mentioned I immediately tune in with the atmosphere. If I don't know the music, well, I always look it up.

I usually listen to music while reading. I just finished Lover Unleashed and to be honest, I was a little disappointed to find out that for the most part the Brothers like rap. I always thought of them listening to metal or industrial music (like me).

Reading for me is not a multi-tasking activity. Well, I can read on a stationary bike or something, but I pretty much tune out the world when I'm in a book so no music for me.

I actually think the presence of too many songs is distracting. For example, in Afterlight, there were numerous references to what was playing in a store, on the ipod, etc. and I would end up thinking oh, that's a good song, which leads me to thinking of other songs/bands or haven't heard that one, maybe I should look it up, which is kinda distracting personally. Maybe I'm just too easily distractable, lol.

Rap?? LOL! I wouldn't have expected that either.

LOL! I have a tendency to start singing along if I play music too loudly while reading. But, I can have the TV on without it bothering me.

Most of the time, I don't recognize the songs/artists. I spent a good portion of my teenage years in Germany (84-88) and preferred listening to a lot of my parent's music (Beatles, The Righteous Brothers, Diana Ross, etc). AFN in the '80s tended to play 50s-80s music anyway, if I remember correctly. I also tend to listen to soundtracks -- scores (LotRs, SW, LOST, Battlestar Galactica) and soundtracks (Top Gun, Footloose) -- and musicals. Oh, and sometimes I'll listen to classical.

I can listen to music, when reading, since much of what's on my iPod is movie/tv scores inter-spaced with individual songs. If I do have it on, I tend to keep on low.
