What will happen next in The Rifter? discussion

Hey all, I was just wondering what everybody was thinking about Book Two and especially what you think of the two timelines.

I love the jump in timelines. It's making me guess constantly as to what has taken place during the gaps from each characters POV. I'm pretty sure I'm guessing wrong but I can't wait to see how it all plays out!

I'm glad you're enjoying the 'mystery' aspect of the time lines-- that was a huge part of why I wrote the book!

Well, you know, whether a person seems nice or not can be a matter of perspective. To Ourath et al, I'm pretty sure Jath'ibaye is an antagonist keeping them from what they want.

@Dlee - I agree. I think Jath'ibaye is John. Not because the beginning of Jath'ibaye's name is Jath, which IIRC is the name John is called, but more because of the description of the Glass Palace and how the plants were indoors. Something I thought a environmental major would do. Plus he doesn't eat dog...

And for how Jath'ibaye acts...it's approx. 40 years on in the timelines. We have no way of knowing what John discovered in the temple, and what things happened to him. Maybe he decided that being in charge would mean less bad things would happen? Plus...for Kahil, this is an alternate timeline. Fijiri hadn't survived in the original timeline - it was John's intervetion that changed the timeline. But then...John is the Rifter, and I'm beginning to think that...fate isn't necessarily applied to him. In other words, he can change things.

What I'm wondering, what I'm hoping is whether Kahil can regain his memory and, if so, go through the Grey Space and back to the right timepoint and change things... I don't know what is possible...

I spent all morning, including my trip to the grocery store, mulling this over. This serial is definitely making me think :)

All I know is I can't imagine how the heck Ginn kept these timelines straight. I have to keep stopping to remind myself which is real, which is alternate -- assuming either.

I figured that both timelines were real. And eventual John will cause a rift that will bring the two together. Or something like that.

Oh, I like that! I was leaning towards Kyle's original timeline being real, but being warped by Jon's presense (as seen with where Kyle is now). But I was thinking it was Kyle who would regain his memories and jump back to the correct time to try and undo certain timepoints. But...if John is The Rifter then...why could he not close instead of tear?

I think I need to being you all in to work on my future writing projects.

Ahhh, yes, but what is a Rifter exactly? I don't think it's going through the Grey Space like Kyle does. I'm kind of speculating that it actually...undoes space, or the atoms that make up space...creating said rift. Then again it could be something else entirely :)

IIRC when Kyle currently is the Rifter has acted...so it hasn't destroyed the world itself.

Speaking of John's "sister" does anyone else think that maybe Laurie is now in the form of a yellow dog? She was referred to on several occasions as a "b*tch." We haven't actually seen her yet... just thinking maybe she went the way other witches seemed to go....

@Dlee - interesting. I hadn't looked at The Rifter in that way at all. Hmmm. I kind of think it may be a mixture of both. Not so much controlling time as destroying time...or a part of time...a part of reality. And it could be a huge part, such as an entire country, or a smaller part, such as this Black Tower that Kyle mentioned. In other words, it's not chosing which time to make reality but which reality should cease to exist.... And speculating is such fun!

@Pink - YIKES! Poor Laurie. The thing is, if one goes in can one come out again?

I was kinda taken aback when they were talking about John being a leader of the red coats. But obviously some serious stuff has gone down in the intervening years. And when you think about it, John really is very honorable. What if while he was living with the priests he learned about the Rifter and realized that these people had been planning to use him to annihilate a whole country. It might have made him change his point view. Maybe. I can't wait to find out. I just hope things get better for Kyle. He's breaking my heart right now.

I thought Kyle's role was to stop The Rifter - as in kill him so he didn't unleash h*ll. Hmmm. Maybe I need to re-read part way to get Kyle's POV...

@Pink-I'm inclined to think that the witches are suffering from a case of Bad Reputation. Witches in Basawar seem to be matrilineal. Witchhood appears to be given by the mother to her children, and so far the “witches” that we’ve seen have been women with incredible innate powers, or in the case of Gaunvur Bousim (who is not really a witch herself but is accused of being one), women with strong wills who just don’t behave as well as someone else thinks they should. A powerful woman would be anathema to a people that literally their wives into marriage, have them tattooed as property, and collect them like they’re baseball cards (or um...some Basawarian equivilent thereof. If Basawar has no cats, there's probably no baseball either...).

And I'm digging the idea that Laurie might actually be Ji Shir‘korud. I don’t know if that would work with the timeline that John is in, though, if he’s in a time where Rathal’pesha still stands (unless Ji is doing some time-travel as well). I just like the idea of (heretofore) timid Laurie being a complete bad-ass that strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies.

I don't think you missed it. I'm pretty sure that hasn't been revealed in the direct text of the story yet--only in that index. (G. Hale apparently stuck this in the index on purpose as a clue to see if anybody would notice it.)

LOL! Actually, although I said I would I probably won't read the index. I kind of like the mad speculating that I'm doing without any more information than what I glean and extrapolate from the book. If I read the index it's not quite as much fun IMHO :)

In that context, searching the index does seem a little like checking for answers in the back of the book. I can see how that would take some of the fun out of everything. Though if you're trying to remember a character's name or what the nuns are called, as opposed to priests- the index is there for you.

*nods* And I should clarify, what I said only applies to me - usually I'd be really tempted to look at the index, but...I'm just enjoying the mad speculating that is no doubt way of base (which is unusual for me as normally I'd worry about being completely wrong and thus looking like an idiot :)

I love the timelines - and actually never really thought about one being actual and the other being alternate - or that the 2 timelines ever meet; I don't think Kyle would be averse to being with "older" John

I pitched it as one history, told in two parts--but that obviously glosses over everything Kyle has to deal with when it comes to his past...(pasts?) ; D

Never fear, I refuse to put characters, (and readers) through the wringer and then deprive them of a happy ending.

And happy endings are actually much more challenging and interesting to plot out, in my opinion, because it's easy to just let everything go to hell--it's much much harder to work out a way for the characters to take on the impossible and WIN!

Hi, Ginn (and Nicole)!

I didn't know where to say this, but I've mentioned we are rereading the Rifter for three months over at Josh's.

One of us just noticed that ebook #2 ends at chapter 19, but ebook #3 starts with chapter 22.

She asked me to check the print edition, and it is the same there.

I think that there was a mistake in the numeration. Those chapter don't exist, do they?

Ah yes! There was a numbering error when the book was cut into ten different sections. It carried over into the print version-- but all the chapters are there.

(good eye, by the way!)
