Serena stood in the crowd of all the other 14 year old girls in district 12. She looked around as all the people gathered around. She looked at all the people around her, wondering if any of them would get picked.
Chrissy's heart pounded, threatning to burst out of her chest. Everyone looked sick to their stomachs, and some parents already had tears rolling down their faces. Looking around, Chrissy caught her brother, Peeta's, eyes, and saw he was watching her. He faked a smile. 'It's going to be okay' he mouthed. She nodded weakly, and sent a prayer for her and Peeta. 'Please keep us safe', she prayed, 'please.'
Serena saw Chrissy. SHe scooted over to her. "Hi." SHe didnt know what else to say. She didnt have anyone to wory about. She didnt have anyone to worry about her either.
Relived to have someone to talk to, Chrissy smiled the warmest grin she could muster and turned to Serena. "Hey. I'm sorry." It was common to say this to fellow children on reaping day. Basically, it was a comfort thing, where you could open up to a stranger about... well, everything.

"Im sorry too." Serena shuffled her feet. She didnt know what else to say."So, hopeing you wont get picked?"
"Who isn't?" Chrissy started, "I'm more terrified then I've ever been. My brother..." She was cut off by Effie Trinket's voice echoing through the square.
Serena looked up at Effie on the stage. She was ignoring it because she wasnt worried.
Meanwhile, Chrissy felt like she was standing at death's door. Which, if her name was called, she very well might be. Effie's voice was loud as she called the name out, "Primrose Everdeen!" A twelve year old. This almost made Chrissy want to cry. A twelve year old, sent out to fight to death! It was inhuman. Then, out of nowhere, a figure stumbled forward, screaming, "Stop, I volunteer!" Katniss, Katniss Everdeen. The girl whose father's singing made the world stop, who Peeta silently loved. She looked at Peeta. He loooked like he was about to cry, and at that moment Chrissy understood more than ever what love was. That look on his face made her want to cry herself, it was that painful to watch her brother go through this. But not as painful as when Effie called out the next name.
Serena watched and she regreted it but she stuck up her hand. "WAIT! I volunteer!" She knew Katniss had a family of her own, but s=what did Serena have to lose?
Chrissy stared at the girl next to her. What the heck? Did she just give up her life so that some stranger could live? Without thinking, she hugged Serena, and wispered, "Thank you." Because even though she didn't know Katniss well, she did know Peeta, and knew that this would kill him. She saw him try to hide the relief on his face, but he failed. Caught up in the moment, she almost missed Effie call out the next name.
"Peeta Mellark!"
"No!" She screamed.
Just then, someone else stepped forward. Gale, Katniss' best friend. In his deep, husky voice, yells,
"I volunteer."
Serena walked up and watched as Gale volunteered. "Stupid kid" She mumbled under her breath.
After the reaping, Chrissy ran up to Peeta. He hugged her with his long, loopy arms and a good 6 inches taller than her he towered over her.
"Gotta go." I said, giving him a wide smile. Then I continued,
"I...I need to talk to the tributes," He nodded, understanding, and I figured he was going to do the same thing,
"See you later." It felt so good to be able to say that.
Serena sat on stage with Gale. She didnt bother looking at him. She stared out into the dissapearing crowd, looking for Chrissy.
At the same time, Chrissy was looking for Serena. When there eyes met, a shudder passed through her, and she hoped that she would make it out of the arena...alive.
r
Serena stared at her then looked away. She was alreaqdy too fond of her. That would only hurt Chrissy in the end.
Chrissy stepped into the room where the girl tributes sat each year and hesitated, biting her lip. She was strangly nervous, and when she saw Serena there she wanted to cry for this girl she didn't know.
Serena looked at Chrissy and frowned. "What do you want?"
"Um." Chrissy cleared her throat.
"Just...I, uh, you know...good luck." She managed to squeeze out.
"And I just want to say thanks." She added quickly, peering at Serena, wondering how she would react.
Serena just waved a dismissive hand. "Yeah yeah. Whatever."
Chrissy frowned a little bit. Biting her lip, she added, whispering,
"I wish I knew you longer."
Serena frowned at her as well. "It isnt your fault. I stayed away from others for my whole life." She thought to herself, Since my family died.
Chrissy thought hard, and relized that Serens HAD stayed away alot. After something happened. But what...?
"I understand. But you should fight your hardest, and come back," Suddenly Chrissy relized what had happened to make Serena so shy.
"So your family will have someone left." She said, wondering if she was tresspassing in Serena's life. But it was true. Serena's family needed at least someone left.
Serena stiffened. "Yeah, but im no use to them anymore. Besides, what about all those other kids? What if there is a little kid who is being forced to go? What about them? They deserve a chance." She had already planned on not coming back. She would help the youngest and then help them make it to the end.
"I'm sorry." Chrissy said again, and walked away, trying not to look back.
Serena sighed. Now she had scarred off someone else. "Chrissy! Im sorry!"
Serena's voice stopped Chrissy. She turned slowly.
"No, I'm sorry. I guess everyone's a little stressed right now." She sat back down.
Serena closed her eyes. "Im always pushing people away. But only cuz I dont want to feel that pain of losing sosmeone anymore." Her conffesion suprised her and she opened her eyes to see what Chrissy's reaction was.
Chrissy just smiled a small smile.
"I...I get that. I do that to my dad." She got a sad look on her face.
"Yeah," Chrissy countinued,"I do that to him alot."
Serena frowned. "You shouldnt. He really cares about you."
It was Chrissy's turn to frown. Her dad cares about her? And how would Serena know?
"What?"
"He really does care, even if at times it doesnt seem like it." Serena remembered how she treated her dad, now she couldnt do anything about it.
Chrissy blushed furiously. She felt embarassed and a new furry sparked at her dad. She thought about how her dad didn't protect her, how he let...
She had to stop thinking about it.
"No, I don't think he does." Chrissy said, her voice full of steel.
"Yeah he does. He just doesnt want to admit his feelings in case you are ever a tribute then it wont be as much of a loss to him."
Shaking her head slightly, Chrissy let out a small, sad smile.
"You don't understand." She said, wondering if she was finally about to tell someone the awful, ugly truth.
Like That. ;)
