Harry Potter discussion

Fanfiction is where I go when I'm bored and currently, I'm on holidays feeling very bored. And I love a good Marauder Era fanfiction without partying, the best friend who gets dumped by Sirius and dies of a broken heart, Lily and James sharing a Heads dormitory... just a good, honest fanfiction.

Does anyone have any suggestions? :D

I currently have a very big obsession over the Marauders Era and have been reading a LOT of fanfic so this is the perfect question for me lol. I'm REALLY picky when it comes to reading from this era since I have a very low tolerance for poor characterization of my favorite characters.

So Remus is my favorite from this era and my main focus when reading these fics but I LOATHE how awfully written he is in 80% of fanfic. From what I've read he's usually portrayed as a very soft, perfect, sweet, prefect rule-follower, who hands out chocolate all the time. And he never leaves that box. He's always so boring and dull and basically a male version of Hermione. Remus never struck me that way. As much as I love his character he's also a coward. Wasn't he the one who failed to stand up for Snape when the others were bullying him? Who wanted to ditch Tonks and Teddy? And not checking on Harry at all throughout GoF? He's far from perfect. Although he's emotionally intelligent he's really manipulative. Remember how he brought up Harry's parents up several times when scolding him? And usually his issues and low self-esteem and inferiority complex are all gone. Also what is up with the obsession with him and chocolate in fics? He only hands it out once in PoA. My biggest complaint is that he's completely glorified and made into this boring caricature of his canon counterpart. I actually liked Remus BECAUSE of his flaws. He's also witty but ofc that's usually gone too.

So the "soft sweet chocolate-loving uwu nerd" characterization really gets on my nerves. But I hate a certain characterization even more. Rant time: a fanfic called 'all the young dudes' blew up two years ago (most viewed ever fanfic on archive of our own) and not to be dramatic but it's completely influenced everything in the Marauders fanfiction circles. In a completely awful way. No offense to the author or anything but everything in that fic is out of canon and frankly it's really annoying how these OC's have replaced the actual characters. Remus got completely retconned to some orphaned, edgy, angry, bitter werewolf guy with dyslexia who's really nothing like his canon counterpart. Basically an OC. He's the opposite end of the soft sweet chocolate-loving Remus and somehow worse. He wasn't a troublemaker or prankster like the others. I wouldn't care since it's fanfic and the author could write whatever they want (obviously) but it's gotten to the point where fanfic Remus is really irritating to read about and to see people calling it canon is not fun. Also this Remus showing up in every headcanon or latest fanfic. Noooo. I can't stand him. Also as much as I dislike Snape, he's completely demonized and made into some rich and posh bully.

It's not just ATYD but a lot fics that suffer from black and white writing. Snape isn't some friendless weirdo who tortures Muggleborns with the other Slytherins nor is he some sweet misunderstood angel who gets wronged by Lily and gets beat up by the Marauders daily; there needs to be some balance or otherwise I click out. James and Sirius's characterizations are harder to pinpoint but usually are more stupid and idiotic than their canon counterparts asking the most foolish questions. Also the obsession with Muggle culture is fun and I really got into a lot of the 70s stuff but it's usually just the Beatles or ABBA that they listen to. Everyone in the OoTP being in the same year as the Marauders? No. The HP world is already small enough as it is. And why would Dumbledore add a bunch of teenagers that just got out of high school for his military group? And for James, he's usually some demon or a Gary Stu. I don't care for James one way or another since he's never really a character in the books anyway but he has potential which I often see more in Jily fics. Speaking of Lily she's perfect 90% of the time and a really irritating Mary Sue version of Hermione with a dose of Ginny. Peter is also not stupid idiot who's pushed around all the time. Okay he kind of is based on Snape's Worst Memory but...wasn't he the one who blew up an entire street and turned into an Animagus at fifteen? He's not as stupid as people make him out to be. I'd like him to be more cunning like he is in canon (which is not shown as much though) with his resentment for the others growing. Sirius is my second favorite in the Marauders (although it's not like there's much of a choice lol) and I could write an entire essay about him but I'll keep it nice and short: he's a really seen as this idiotic goofball who has only pranks on his mind without any depth. He often tells a load of cringe jokes and acts like a puppy. I prefer a darker Sirius who although is really loyal is just as cruel.

And ofc Regulus, a character who hardly existed and got popular because of a fancast, aka. all the wrong reasons (speaking of fancasts: I really hate Remus's Andrew Garfield one. Like just no. James and Sirius's are also pretty terrible and Peter is 70% of the time too good-looking. Although Adam Driver would be a decent Snape lol). I could write a whole rant about Regulus but I'll keep it summarized: I HATE how much he's coddled in fics. He was a Death Eater at some point and not Draco 2.0 who had no choice. He never shows up in the books, not even in a flashback, but I really love the idea of his character except he's often written terribly. I don't mind any characterization for him as long as it's not the case with him being a misunderstood martyr.

I ofc hate bashing of any characters because it's lazy and dumb and click out of it as soon as I see something remotely like it. I'm missing a lot but this is already long enough as it is so rant aside these are my favorite and the best Marauders era fanfictions:
