His detractors were not all that reliable in my opinion either. I saw the 60 minutes feature and that plus their reputation for reliability made me want to read the book. The point was essenttially true, I believe. He did build schools, staff some with teachers in an area of the world that truely needed them. What the communities did with them cannot be controlled--what is he going to do, repossess them for breach of contract? His message of passifism on the Afgahan war and the Middle East conflict probabley earned him a lot of flack from the powers that be.
There was an article in the news over the weekend that said he would continue as the face for the organization, but that others would be handling the money. The DA in Mont. who investigated him essentially stated that he felt the author was a financial/business dunce, who really probably didn't the see reason to learn proper bookkeeping techniques, etc. If he gives the organization no problems from here on out regarding their way of doing business, maybe he was just really naieve. Money didn't really register with him, except as a figure to get things accomplished, in the book. Not a good recommendation for the sole director of an charitable organization.Accountability is always important. He at least needed to have credible auditors. Guess maybe he studied accounting and finance at the Enron/WallStreet school of Business.
He is the face of the organization, he also is the one with the contacts, driving passion ,ability and willingness to devote the time the necessary travel required to raise the awareness of the organization and meet with the actual receipents to see what their perceived and real needs are.Just so long as the western branch holds him to a a budget and relieves him of the bookkeeping/accounting responsibilites I think everyone will be used to their best advantage and the program can do what it is meant to do--bring education and development they can use to the deprived, rural, Afghans.
