I am always drawn to characters and stories that are different. I guess that is why I can't stand movies with obvious plots. If I can guess what will happen after watching the trailer, then I am not interested.
I went to a bookstore last week and was amazed at all the vampire and wizard stories in the YA section.
I can't really criticize those writers because they did something right to get published and took advantage of what YA readers wanted to see, but I still think it is more interesting to write something new.
The trick is to come up with the next big thing. What J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Myers have done is very impressive

~*Just Slytherin Along w/ The Creatures*~ (Patrick Swayze's lover) (thejsaway) i have to agree but i am certainly not a fan of vampire books

How about Eric "Moby" Calhoune in Staying Fat for Sarah Burns? Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher

I haven't thought about this book for years, but it was one of my favorite YA books, although I thought the ending was a bit weak.

I've never heard of it. What's it about. Could you possible give me a synopsis?

It has been a few years since I read it, but I remember it being about two friends, Sarah and Eric. Sarah suffered disfiguring burns, hence her name, and Eric is still nice to her. He is on the swim team, but purposely stay heavy so he too will have a problem like Sarah.

I can't remember much more except that both characters were memorable and realistic.

Awww! That's so sad...I think I've heard of it. Did it ever become a movie?

;(. That's sad. I love and hate sad stories/ books at the same time. It gives a nice tinge to the stroy's plot to make it better but at the sam etime makes me feel sad on the inside. :)

Wow, you all are coming up with some good suggestions. Maybe we can compile a list of favorite non-magical/vampire characters.

I will wait a few days for even more suggestions and then create a poll for us to use to rank our favorites.
