I have research paper to write and I figure that this man had a dream to significantly alter African history. Anyone have anything informational yet compelling to suggest?

One was instantly recognizable as Garvey.
Have you come across Cedric J. Robinson's Black Marxism, The Making of the Black Radical Tradition, which places Garvey and the UNIA in a broad historical context?
I'm sorry I didn't see this post sooner. I've got a book on my shelf I've been planning to read that looks really good.Negro with a Hat: The Rise and Fall of Marcus Garvey and His Dream of Mother Africa.

I'm sorry I didn't see this post earlier but it's something I'll surely look to read through this summer. The other books I came across were adequate but simply lacking in broad historical context. Something I was in dire need of as my thesis was his significance to Africa and African Americans alike.

Those actually turned out to be two of my most significant sources. Thanks.
Does that mean you've finished, Shua? if so, congratulations!I'd like to read Robinson's book myself at some point and the book Andrea mentioned. Perhaps we could do a side-read of some sort at some point if others are interested? marcus garvey and that era of U.S. history is something i've always wanted to learn more about.

Hah. Thanks a lot.
I picked up a copy of Robinson's book yesterday. I'll make sure to let you know how it's going. I'd be delighted if we could discuss at some point.
