★ Jess | 3071 comments Thanks for starting this thread, I cant believe it hasnt already been made!

My all time favorite is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone & its sequels. For me, those seven books are head-and-shoulders above anything else I have ever read. I gave every one of those books 5 stars. There are magnificent characters, a clever plot (There are tiny things mentioned in the first book, that seem pointless, but have a large role in the finale), and it covers almost every genre. Name a genre: its covered in the books.
Ive grown up with these books. My dad read them to me when I was four or five, and i've loved them ever since.
I can rant for hours about those books. I DARE someone to tell me they're crap. I dare you.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7) by J.K. Rowling

I also love the 'Chaos Walking' trilogy by Patrick Ness:
The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, Monsters of Men
Again, I gave all three of these five stars. These are the most creative & unique books I have ever read. Its set in a world where everyone can hear everyone elses thoughts: just read the description of book #1, okay?
The writing is MAGNIFICENT. If I can be half as good a writer as Patrick Ness, I will be extremely happy. He is like a writing God. By far the most talented author Ive ever read. And the best news? The sequels get better and better. And the endings are all awesome cliffhangers. The last paragraph of the last book is the greatest conclusion Ive ever read.
Just look at all the reviews for 'monsters of men'. The lowest I saw was 4 stars. And there was only one of those.
The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, #2) by Patrick Ness Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness

I would say The Hunger Games, but since the final book: Mockingjay, was utter rubbish, It is ineligible for 'best trilogy' award.

I would also mention the dark world, rich romance & terrific suspense in The Forest of Hands and Teeth and its sequels, but I havent even read the final book yet, so we'll put a hold on that one :)

Maggie Oooh, I seem to have quite a few series. I enjoy them ALOT.

I LOVE Marion Zimmer Bradley's work especially The Mists of Avalon series, and the Ramses: The Son of Light series plus the Stone of Light books Nefer the Silent by Christian Jacq. And what about the Millenium series The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

Others I have enjoyed areThe Clan of the Cave Bear, the Valley of Horses, the Mammoth Hunters, the Plains of Passage, the Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben, a couple of "Harry Bosch" books by Michael Connolly, and the first two "Jack Reacher" books by Lee Child.

I'm working my way slowly through the Outlander series for total escape.

Children's series? Any of the Alfie series by The Shirley Hughes Collection, the Famous Five , Secret Seven by Enid Blyton, John Marsden Tomorrow, When the War Began series.

I thought Twilight was fun, and so are books by Clive Cussler and Matthew Reilly.

And that's just for a start. I'm sure I'll think of more.

Maggie, have you only read 2 'Jack Reacher' by Lee Child? I'm reading his latest at the moment. I love them all, have them all..always anxious for the next one!! Didn't you enjoy them enough to keep reading them? I love some of the others you have enjoyed too :)

message 12: by Maggie (new)

Maggie I read lots and lots of them but suddenly tired of Jack's character.
I thought the first two were exceptional though.

Oh, ok! I'm still enjoying him..:) I think because there's always a large break between his books, and I always thoroughly enjoy them when I get to them.

ahh jess a girl after my own heart!
i would defend harry potter to the death!
i found this passage while reading
The Neverending Story its just after bastian steals the book
if you have never spent whole afternoons with burning ears and rumpled hair, forgetting the world around you over a book, forgetting cold and hunger- if you have never read secretly under the bedclothes with a flashlight, because your father or mother or some other well-meaning person has switched off the lamp on the plausible ground that was time to sleep because you had to get up early- if you have never wept bitter tears because a wonderful story has come to an end and you must take your leave of the characters with whom you have shared so many adventures, whom you have loved and admired, for whom you have hoped and feared, and without whose company life seems empty and meaningless- if such things have never been part of experience, you probably won't understand what bastian did

its how i feel about harry potter and reading in general...although being 20 i get to turn the light off when i want to now lol
