I just counted my recent hauls over the past 3 weeks and the piles is comprised of 32 books! Lots of reading for me to do then. Don't have time to link them all now, will do later.

Also, got yet another 6 in the post... 7 after today.

My boyfriend smokes way too much!! :P Good for my book collection, bad for his bank balance.

Char (CharmaineElaine) I just got a couple of books Yay! I stole my brother's money, but don't tell him lol. I got: The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong I know I said I wasn't going to read them until all the books came out but it was only £1.90
Lirael Daughter of the Clayr (Abhorsen, #2) by Garth Nix I didn't know this was the 2nd of a trilogy, you'd have thought they'd put it on the book lol. It does sound pretty good though.

message 5: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Sabriel (book 1) is my favourite of that trilogy. Lirael is set with the next generation. For me, Lirael was the slowest of the three books... it kinda bugged me that Sabriel, who I really liked as a character, was no longer the heroine. Lirael didn't interest me as much as a character. But the trilogy is still good. I like Garth Nix.

The Summoning is also good. Just so you know, it ends on a cliffhanger! When I read it I found that I actually had to go out and buy books 2 and 3, I had no choice in the matter!

message 6: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I can't wait to read it, I just have to buy books 1 and 3 lol.

I know, I remember you saying but it was a bargain so I wasn't leaving it in the shop. =D

message 7: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Have you read Mister Monday through Lord Sunday? Very different to Abhorsen trilogy but also good. Gonna be a new Abhorsen book coming out this year (might be out already, can't remember when it's released) but it's set in the past. About on of the antagonists you meet in... I think in Lirael.

I can quite understand that! I get that a lot when I find bargains! :P I've got the first book of the second trilogy coming to me, hope it's as good.

message 8: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) No I haven't read the author before, but the book sounded really good.

I think everyone gets like that about a bargain. Oooh! Me too, I'm going to be buying all the trilogies until it all makes sense lol. =P

message 9: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Oh, he's very good. Even my macho brother read one of his books! :p Though we were at a festival, it felt like it was ten billion degrees c in the tent. It was impossible to stay in the tent past about 9am and we had to wait til 4pm for the music to start... lots of reading that weekend!

Haha, I think that's what I'm going to do too! Is that what her adult books are like too? A number of sets of trilogies? Or is it just one big long series?

message 10: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Is he? I've got another one of his books, Ragwitch or something like that. Typical, at least you got to read loads.

No her adult series is just one long series but with different narrators. If I'm honest I'm feeling book 3.

message 11: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I think Ragwitch is one of his earlier works. A lot of them were published in Australia years before they ever made it to the UK and the US. Funny cuz they're better YA stuff than a lot of the trash we get from the US atm. I've never read Ragwitch, I wanted it at one point but didn't have the money for it.

Aaah ok, are they all in the first person or the third? I'm still debating whether to read more of her... when I've reduced my TBR pile a bit more!

message 12: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I want to move to Australia! They get some pretty awesome books. I know, the stuff from the US is just more of the same thing although I do occasionally find American books that are really good.

1st person. She's a good author. I really like her.

message 13: by Rea, Ghost (last edited May 24, 2011 11:05AM) (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Yeah, same with everything. Some American books are the best, but a lot seem to comply to some unwritten norm that just isn't for me. Plus, when they're humourous, unless it's dark or dry humour, I get the impression that I don't get it as much as I should.

Aah ok. I usually write in first person. I like being in the character's head.

I see you added a House of Night book to your to read list... what's HoN like? I've heard so much bad stuff about it, another one I haven't wanted to touch due to Twilight and bad press.

message 14: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know they do. I don't know why I buy them. I don't get American humour, I prefer the British one.

I do too. I like being in lots of characters heads though.

I did, TBH, it's an easy read but the girl is a complete slapper, she has like 4 boyfriends. I really don't think you'll like it because of that. It does have some interesting takes on vampyres though.

message 15: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I like Dexter dark humour, or India Black dry humour. I (usually) hate it when American authors try to write British humour. Everyone else in the world seems to think it's our humour when in reality it's a far cry from what we find humourous. Like that Soulless series... everyone seems to think it's British humour. The author can't even write British English, for crying out loud! Grr.

Yeah, that's the appeal of 3rd person. But I don't like it when the PoV jumps around within a same paragraph.

A slapper with 4 boyfriends? I'll pass. :p

message 16: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I love Dexter, I enjoyed book 1 I got the rest of them for christmas and I'm hoping to read them at some point before I die lol. Grr. I hate it when American authors try to be British. It isn't going to work.

Oh I hate it when that happens. It got particularly bad in the Blue Bloods series.

Yup, I thought you might. =P

message 17: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I still need to order the other books. :p I thought the first one was really good. It was one of the few times when the words in my head weren't coming to me in my voice, but in Michael C. Hall's voice. It was excellent! :D Yeah, I dislike it when Americans go British, but also when British go American and the spelling's either all wrong or randomly jumps between British and American English.

Never read that one either :p Another one I'm not gonna like? I used to love browsing the YA section... I feel like SMeyer took something away from me with Twilight-mania. :(

message 18: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I didn't need to order them, I did puppy dog eyes on my mummy and I got them for Christmas last year. =D I know, I saw him as Dexter as well. I just wish people would accept their nationality and live with it. A really bad example of bad American British is in The Immortals series by Alyson Noel, she had a cockney character and he said 'luv' at the end of every sentence.

No you won't. It's got some good ideas but they aren't well executed, which is a shame. The author is another one who is inspired by Muse. I know, YA used to be so amazing. =(

message 19: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I could probably get them for Xmas if I asked... or if a mate comes to visit I might be able to bum the books from 'em.
Never Noel, either. I always view "luv" as being a more northern thing. Yorkshire in particular. I call everyone "love". XD and sometimes "duck(y)".
I dislike Gail Carriger for it. It bugs me so so SO much when a British upper-class lady is going on about "ladybugs". They're ladybirds! They've always been ladybirds!

What's with all the Muse inspiration for vampires? The guy's obsessed with aliens, not vamps.
I still mourn the days when I could walk into the YA section and see a variety of cover art types... now it's all black with a random picture on it. What annoys me most is Wuthering Heights in the YA section, Twlight cover style, with the words "Edward and Bella's favourite book" on the front cover. WHAT THE HELL? Poor, poor, poor Emily Brontë!

message 20: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Yeah, I'm like that this year, all the YA book series that I've started but I think aren't worth my money, I'm getting for Christmas.
I know, I say "love" a lot and I am a Lancastrian.
OMG! If you're going to write a book about a Nritish character, learn about our language! That's how I feel.

I know, I'm going to write a book about aliens and conspiracy theories and dedicate it to him lol. I think he'd like that. I do too, if I find a book that looks even remotely different I pick it up. I know, she's turning in her grave.

message 21: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I get the books I'm unsure of from the bf for his smoking :p Works out well for me.
Tara or Ivon, as southerners, will have to weigh in with the "love" thing. For me it's just a normal part of daily speech.
I know, it really, really bugs me when the book is set in Britain, especially period Britain, but written in modern day American. They often actually "translate" books from British English to American English before they publish them there... :/

Hehe, yeah I bet he'll like that! I like aliens, too, though conspiracy theories sometimes just frustrate me... they've gotta be good. My ABC (American Book Center) doesn't have much of a YA section and most of it is Twlight-alikes (Vampire Diaries, HoN, VA, etc.) or ones that I've read bad reviews about (The Luxe, The Iron King, etc). Waterstones is better, but it's still heavily Twilight-esque dominated. And they have a banner that says "have an a-Meyer-zing time" which really, really bugs me every time I see it.

message 22: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Haha, it's a great plan. Yes they will, since we're both northerners.

Grr! That makes it even worse. I am British, I want to read a book which is written in British English.

Haha, another one of my amazing ideas, maybe it can be about an alien race who have a dark history that the residents theorise about.
I know the feeling, I will however point out that I liked The Luxe. It's like a period Gossip Girl but better. I haven't been to Waterstone's in ages but if I do and they have that banner I'm going to self combust or something lol.

message 23: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
So Tara, Ivon - do you ever call people "love"? Or get called love.
Like:
*buying the paper* "that'll be 1 pound please, love."
I always figured it was a more northern thing, but I might be wrong.

When you read "traveling" or other similiar words with only one 'l' does the word look unbalanced to you? It does to me, it looks wrong.

I've heard both good and bad about The Luxe. If I ever find it in the money off section I might try it out but as it's a large paperback it's quite expensive and I'm not willing to invest that much money in something I'm not sure I'll enjoy.

That banner in Waterstones drives me nuts. Every time I want to rant about it to the employees. They've had it up for like two years, unall! two whole years! Can't they take it down already?

message 24: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I hate it when I see 'traveling' I just wnat to correct it to 'travelling'. I mean, I also think 'center' looks wrong. In a speeling test as a kid we were asked to spell 'centre' which I did. When we handed them out for the other kids to mark mine came back with loads of crosses because they'd done American spelling. I had to complain to the teacher, I knew for a fact I was right.

You should at least give it a go. Wait for it to go down in price. (I don't get why books are so expensive abroad).

Haha! I'd be thinking about doing it myself.

Well, i ain't orginalry from south, im from north myself, and there is more chance of being called love up there then down here, though i sometimes slip up and say love to guys, and they kind of stare at me! lol

message 26: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol, it sounds like "love" is a northern thing. Stupid author of a stupid book lol

message 27: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I was sure it was a northern thing! It's normal to be called love up there. And "love" just doesn't fit with the softer southern accents as well as it does with the harder northern ones!

message 34: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I moved to Wales when I was 12 and my mum brother don't really have their accents and even then mine was slightly different because mine's a Bolton one.

Yes lets have a bit of Yorkshire. Look at us getting excited about being northerners lol

message 35: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
We'r riight chuffed, arn't we?

It's really hard to do!! How do you translated Yorkshire pronunication of 'we' do type?

Plus, Yorkshire's huge and the accent changes a LOT from city to city.

I (from Huddersfield ) say "ah ya shur?"
Friend (from Bradford) says "ar yoo shoowah?"
And the two cities are only 20 mins apart by car!

message 36: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol. I love the Yorkshire accent. XD

I think it's different for everyone. I find my mum says 'look' 'book' 'cook' and I go 'luk' 'buk' 'cuk' and we're from same place. XD

message 37: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
If you're brought up in Yorkshire you know there's a very pronounced difference between accents. There are small differences within cities, but it's still a "Leeds accent" and a "Bradford / Bradistan (depending on your heritage) accent" and a "Pontefract accent" and so on.

I also use a very hard "u" in my words!

message 38: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Woo, I love the diffeerences in accents.

message 39: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I got some more books today! 13 Little Blue Envelopes (Little Blue Envelope, #1) by Maureen Johnson and Mercy (Mercy, #1) by Rebecca Lim

message 40: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I finally got Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan I've been wanting it for so long. My brother said I shouldn't get it because I saw the film. (I had to see the film, it had Owen Wilson in it. Evidently a no brainer.) I can't wait to read it.

message 42: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) The book or the film?

message 43: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
The book. I haven't seen the film because the book left me traumatised enough. The problem for me is that I associate everything dog-like with the loss of Rosa, which brings my own pain of loss into the mix.

message 44: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Oh. I cried an ocean at the film. I don't know why I have this desire to read the book, but still. Aww. I've never had a dog (unless you count my Nintendogs) so I don't get it. I probably will if anything happens to Mischief.

message 45: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Everyone I know who's seen the film cried, even the guys! I don't know why we humans put ourselves through such pain. Does your copy of the book have all the photos in it? Just looking at them made me tear up too because I knew they were someone's fond memories of a lost friend!

message 46: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I don't either. It's a great film though. Yes it does. I looked at them, but I won't get the emotion until I've read it. I know, it's so sad.

The first book ( Geist (Book of the Order, #1) by Philippa Ballantine ) was one of my favourite reads of 2010. I've been itching to get my hands on this sequel since October last year! Whoop whoop!! Happy me! :)

Wow, Tara giving a book 5 stars, that's a rarity! ;)

Mine aren't so much a recent haul as a recent "rummage in the basement". But I found some interesting titles.

This Sceptred Isle by Christopher Lee - British history from 55BC through 1901.

The Circle and the Cross (The Wanderers, #1) by Caiseal Mór - Ireland when the Christians first came and threatened the pagan ways. 1st of a trilogy.

Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1) by Robin Hobb - Robin Hobb. 'Nuff said.
