Emma Holmes Ok, so we all know that there is a lot of 'goings on' in Wuthering Heights, but who is the true source of all the trouble? Catherine Earnshaw? Heathcliff? Edgar Linton?

Personally, I think it is Catherine.

Catherine is indecisive when it comes down to what she wants, but she wouldn't have a problem if the problem didn't exist.. I think it's the Lintons that presented the conflict - when Catherine stayed at Thrushcross Grange for that little period of time, she came back a different person - she wasn't the Catherine we'd grown accustomed to before.

Edgar Linton didn't make the situation any better - the Lintons moulded Catherine and Edgar claimed the new Catherine as his prize. The new Catherine was sensitive about her relationship with Heathcliff, but apparantly she wasn't above considering Edgar's proposal.

Emma Holmes Personally, I think Catherine is very selfish. I actually read a really good article on Wuthering Heights the other day. It was called 'The Lunatic and the Devil' and its about Catherine and Heathcliff's relationship. It is very interesting and talks about Catherine's selfishness and Heathcliff's vindictivness.

I think Catherine wants Heathcliff, but also wants the rich lifestyle Edgar can give her. When she see's that at Thrushcross Grange, she persues Edgar (or I see it like that) and when she marries him it changes everything. I think she just has a crazed need for everyone to love her.
