If you feel brave, and ignore the film

Or a classic

Jackie will be a good person to ask

The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
And I agree with Ice about the dune preludes being good. Try House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and House Corrino

Just finished (and reviewed) Dune and enjoyed it, but will take your word (and others' too!) about the prequels and look out for them.
Also very much enjoyed Helliconia: Helliconia Spring Helliconia Summer Helliconia Winter Sf Masterworks by Brian Aldiss in its one-volume trilogy version. Not perfect by any means but also a thought-through 'planetary romance' like Dune with care given to the science behind the beings inhabiting another world. Also very long, so perhaps not for the first-timer.
Robopocalypseis a great young adult science fiction book. its like a light read as the plot isnt heavy at all, well thats what i can gather so far from the book as i am currently reading it, along side of other books. :)

I love Ender's Game...one of my all-time favs.....after that I read Ender in Exile...which is actually the 6th book, but the direct sequel to Ender's game.....I didn't read all the in between books that weren't about Ender....he is one of my favorite literary characters. I also read A War of Gifts and Ender's Shadow which I also enjoyed.

And one that mixes Sci Fi and Fantasy Intervention - although you might want to start either side of the series - The Many-Coloured Land or Jack the Bodiless
