Man, I wish I can speak Japanese or read for that matter. I've been dying to learn, but I hate sitting in a classroom. Any advice for me who's trying to learn the language on my own?

You can find one online (Skype lessons) if you can't find anyone living nearby who might be able to help.
I used to join Japan Foundation & Japan Club when I was still living in KL. That's how I met lots of Japanese friends who helped improve my Japanese.
Jack, you can learn some basic Japanese phrases here:http://japanese-phrases.sakura.ne.jp/
There's a free online course @ Tokyo University of Foreign Studies' website (http://cblle.tufs.ac.jp/moodle/login/...) but it may be a bit difficult for beginners.
