Loosed in Translation discussion

I just finished reading Jose Saramago's The Elephant's Journey a few weeks ago and I can't get it out of my head. There's something very playful about his prose - I describe it as a cross between Jane Austin & Ismail Kadare - that appeals to me. And while the plot is very simple, it's hugely entertaining.

I wonder if his other books are the same? Can anyone recommend another of his books that is similar in tone?
