Tracy (tjohn33791) There hasn't been any activity for a month.

message 2: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Hey Tracy, I still come here and look around. I love true crime but I don't read just that genre so I end up flitting around. I wonder if anyone would be interested in a true crime group read every two months or so?

message 3: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tjohn33791) I'm open to the idea.

message 4: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) I'd been wondering why this group is so quiet too.

I love group reads. I'm in so many groups that do group reads that I probably shouldn't join another one, but I would most likely join in if this group did one anyway!

message 5: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Cool, Amy is the leader so I'm going to message her and see what she thinks. I hate to step on toes :)

Clare~me too as far as the groups both f2f and online, that's why I was thinking maybe every other month. Let's see if we can stir some life up here :) Love true crime.

Does anyone know of any book written about the Casey Anthony case other than the one by Diane Fanning?

message 6: by Kipi (new)

Kipi (kitdragon) | 2 comments I'd like a group read too! As long as I can find the book :-D Many "book of the months" aren't available in Finland as easily as in the States for example. :-/

message 7: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog I haven't heard from Amy yet. I figured we'd give it a few days for her to respond....hopefully she's still around. Otherwise, I'm thinking that maybe by the end of the week we can all throw out a suggestion...make sure we can all get it and jump right in :)?

Sounds great I would love to be part of a group read. I am reading Kevin FlynnRelentless Pursuit it is great. It is written by a state prosecutor, he brings in a different view point. Wonder if his other books are good. Anyone read any of his works?

message 9: by Kendall (new)

Kendall (kendalln) Count me in for a group read. I think it would be fun to read true crime as a group. Lots of stuff to talk about there.

Sorry, Lorifog, but the only book about the Casey Anthony case is the one I wrote, MOMMY'S LITTLE GIRL.

message 11: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Hi Ken

I'm not the moderator of the group but I did message her last week to see if she was still active. I kind of just threw out the idea that we could read together once every two months . I'm in a number of other groups so I couldn't commit to more than that but I do love True Crime and sharing books.

That being said, I haven't heard anything back from the moderator so I don't think it would be a problem if we threw out a suggestion or so each this week and then I'll see if i can set up a poll and we can vote? any thoughts?

message 12: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout looks really good to me so I'll just second that one! :)

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura | 4 comments Hi, I am new to reading true crime and found this book The Night Stalker I don't know if many of you have already read it but I would like to nominate it for a group read. It is a case I followed and it seems to be well written.

message 14: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) Well, if we're doing nominations now I'd like to nominate Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas.

The Sociopath Next Door sounds really awesome but the Kindle edition is outrageously priced so I won't vote for it (but if it ends up being our group read I'll see if I can get it from the library). I was going to link to the Kindle edition of Mindhunter but for some reason I can't find it on Amazon. I know it exists, though, because I have it! Though I didn't know it existed until I finished reading a different Douglas book on my Kindle and it was suggested... Anyway, I don't know if anyone else cares about Kindle editions but that's my contribution ;)

message 15: by Nobadwriting (new)

Nobadwriting | 1 comments I'd definitely be interested in reading: The Sociopath Next Door. Just finished In Cold Blood, and was debating what to read next.

message 16: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Well these all look good! I have Night Stalker on my tbr shelf.

I'm going to set up a poll (if I can) just to ask a few questions...

message 17: by Alana (new)

Alana | 1 comments I would love to do a group read!

message 18: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Anyone who hasn't nominated a read and would like to please do so! I figured maybe we'd give it to the end of the week and then do a vote so people have time to get their books and maybe we could start our read for July??

I'm looking forward to it...might take a few months for us to get really moving but it could be fun.

♥ Marlene♥ | 65 comments I'd love to read a real true crime book. This book The Sociopath looks interesting but looks to me to be more a psychology genre. I have read the Night Stalker of course, Loved it though. also read The Mindhunter. I do know it seems to be harder to find a recent good true crime book nowadays. When i look on amazon I see new books but many have bad reviews.
Is Ann Rules newest book In the Still of Night still not out in paperback? Maybe we can do that one for the next read? Not sure if I have time to participate with the coming renovation of my house. (bleh)

♥ Marlene♥ | 65 comments I also want to read Delivered from Evil by Ron Franscell but also only published in hardback and kindle. Is this the future? (Buying a kindle for an e reader is not the bet option for someone from Europe) It appears you can only buy books from amazon and they are much more expensive for us, plus no free books. I see A Slaying in the Suburbs. not sure how expensive this will be. Oh well I just wait and see and shut up. Too moody, too much work for me that makes me moody. ;)

message 21: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog LOL Marlene...I feel your pain, renovating our home made me cranky. I would not want to do that again.

I'm going to throw another idea out there..... A Poisoned Passion by Diane Fanning just love her books.

I think I'll wait until the weekend and see if we get a few more nominations and then set up a poll.

message 22: by Alie (last edited Jun 10, 2011 04:56AM) (new)

Alie | 37 comments Should we wait until the Casey Anthony trial is over before doing a book on that case? There is so much new information coming out. Just a thought.

I'm in for Mindhunter or The Night Stalker.

I nominate: The Cooper's Wife is Missing by Hoff and Yates (last 'witch/fairy' burned in Ireland), Sympathy for the Devil by Virginia McConnell (famous murders in SF church 1895), Savage Grace by Robins (silver spoon matricide), Shot in the Heart by Mikal Gilmore (Gary's brother trying to come to terms). I've read these and they are all well written, descriptive and have a definite unique flavor. I would also be interested in reading The Basement: Meditations on a Human Sacrifice by Kate Millett and a book on the German cellar case, eventually the Duggard case also.

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) ♥ Marlene♥ wrote: "I also want to read Delivered from Evil by Ron Franscell but also only published in hardback and kindle. Is this the future?"

It only came out in January, according to Amazon. I'm sure there will be a paperback eventually. Sometimes it takes a long time.

The Ann Rule book you mention is available in the US Kindle store.

It is absolutely possible to buy books from sites other than Amazon to read on a Kindle. Books that are available on Smashwords usually have a .mobi version available--that format is Kindle-readable. Also, any ebook in any format that isn't protected by DRM can be converted to .mobi format with the free program Calibre.

message 24: by Emmy (new)

Emmy (emmob) | 13 comments I go from true crime to other genres, and I just happen to be out of books. I would like to vote for a group read, but not vote for an Ann Rule book. I tried to read one, and it was just to dry for me. House of Secrets was one of the most troubling books I have ever read, and would love to hear what others think.

message 25: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Hi everyone!

I took the liberty of setting up a poll here so please go to the poll area and vote. Unfortunately, I don't think the poll allows for more than 4 choices at a time, so i took the first 4 nominations. They all look good!

message 26: by Diane (new)

Diane Fanning (httpwwwgoodreadscomdfanning) | 5 comments the only book out about Casey Anthony right now is the one I wrote, MOMMY'S LITTLE GIRL. It was quite gratifying to me yesterday when the prosecution named the duct tape as the murder weapon. That is exactly the conclusion I reached and wrote about in my book. message 27: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) I've seen lots of polls with more than four options. I think in one group there were over twenty nominations for the group read and they were all on the poll. But maybe you have to be a mod.

message 28: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 28 comments People have been so obsessed with The Casey Anthony case. A friend of mine sits in front of her tv day in & day out watching this tragedy unfold. But with this court case unfolding & so much more to be learned about it I don't understand why anyone would write a book about it until this case has wrapped up. Everybody knew the same things by that time. What we were seeing on tv. I worked for lawyers for years & they're response to someone writing a book before the whole story was told was that someone wanted to make a quick buck. Someone else will write another book after this court case has ended & more facts are out there. That's a book I would be interested in reading.

I drop in here sometimes and would love a group read

I read the book too, because we were in FL at the time this was all coming to a head, and I really don't know much about the case. I think new information will come out on this case, but it seems that the evidence is so solid, that the events can be assumed.

I have read Mindhunter, and agree that any of his books would be a great discussion. I loved Cases that Haunt Us, it was so cool that he covered historical cases like Jack the Ripper. Anyone else read that book?

message 33: by Beth (new)

Beth (pigletpsu) | 24 comments The Sociopath book sounds good, and i've really heard great things about Night Stalker. May I also recommend "The Onion Field) Onion Field Onion Field by Joseph Wambaugh Joseph Wambaugh . This book kept me on the edge of my seat; i couldn't put it down.

I read House of Secrets and agree that it was a disturbing book. I have also read The Sociopath next door. It was a bit dry. I have Night Stalker but have only read a couple of chapters. I love John Douglas books so I would vote for Mindhunter although I have read it also.

I read that a few moths ago and I loved it too. It was fascinating to read his theories on Jack the Ripper, and to find out much more about cases like the Lindbergh baby and JonBenet Ramsey, which I hadn't known much about before. It made me want to read more of his books!

message 36: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Well folks it looks like a tie between The Sociopath Next Door and MindHunter, so how about I make a thread for both and we can start reading those in July...whichever you choose or both if you choose?

message 37: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) Sounds good! I put The Sociopath Next Door on hold at my library, so I'll read both if it comes in time. Will we discuss as we read or read the books and then discuss?

message 38: by Beth (new)

Beth (pigletpsu) | 24 comments sounds great to me. i'm going for the mindhunter book personally.

message 39: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Will we discuss as we read or read the books and then discuss?

Good question, majority rules but I, personally, find that I get more out of a discussion if it is broken into parts and discussed as we read. Breaking it up into parts avoid spoilers for those that are bothered by them. Any thoughts?

I have both books on reserve at the library and can set up threads as soon as I get my hands on the books.

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth (pigletpsu) | 24 comments I've never done this before, but I think breaking it up in parts is only better so there are no spoilers. just my thought.

I could not agree more. I'm sure many books will emerge, and some will be done in a thorough fashion. A book could be written simply on how Cindy and George were so bamboozled by their daughter, and probably from childhood enabled her. (just my take)

I'll be really interested in reading something done after the trial. We're they bamboozled or were they in denial? Maybe a combination of both, I guess. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that courtroom.

Hey Steven~there are a number of groups that have active participants. It does take some time to look around and find them though. I find the more specific groups, such as this one, have fewer people participating.

It has had some great reviews and is currently at number 37 on the Good reads best break out author novel list. Diane, I look forward to reading that book. After working for lawyers (I will never do that again!! lol) I don't like to read books before the trial is finished. So much more comes out. I look forward to the new book & will be one of the first to purchase a copy!
