MID MONTH:Popular Books:
On the top of your GR page, click on the arrow next to the 'friends' link and click on 'popular books'. This will then list popular books among your GR friends. Read a book off this list for 40 points (it can be a re-read).
question for 2...can books feature LGBT characters? I know a few authors who are, but I do read a lot of M/M stuff...just wondering if I can count them...lol!
For challenge 3, does the override of the 5 books max limit mean that we can read as many books with that one word for the rest of the year...or that we can only get credit for ONE book?
I'm not sure if I understoond your Q rightly, Christina but here goes my response to what I think you are asking :)
you only get credit for reading each letter of your word once. So, one book per letter only and the challenge is only for "a word" so... choose the longest word to read lots of books ;)

Um, no? I might not have word it properly, sorry. Sinus infection ---> mushy brain.
I meant choose a word and read books with title / authors name to spell the word. Is that better? :p

ahhhhh so not read A book...read books that title/author begins with each letter to spell it! OKAY. And we can mix which one we use as long as it adds up? I think I got it! Feel better, sinus infections are no fun!!
so I could pick for example conscientious - and have an author who's last name starts with C, a title beginning with O, a first name beginning with N...etc? or do we have to use all first name/ all last name etc?
Ya, I thought for this one we had to either use all authors first names, all authors last names, or all titles?
Keep asking those questions, gals. I am just beginning to figure out what the task is and did not know the questions to ask!
My understanding was you had to spell your word using either author's name or titles.I would think you should be consistent with first name or last name if using the author's. I'm using titles though so I may be wrong.
looking back, that's what i'm thinking as well...and then comes the, an we drop the the, a, an type words... ;)I think it would be more of a challenge to be consistent with first name/ last name but it would be a challenge to just spell the word
Thanks, Christina. On a course of antibiotics so hopefully soon :)
And Lauren, you got it exactly right. Cheers!

one more quick clarification - i'm working on my list right now...so if i'm doing titles...The Iron Duke - T or I?? most groups allow you to drop the "the", "an", "a" as long as you are consistent
So I don't know if this was ever mentioned, but since the merging of shelves...you can still get to the page to search specific shelves as opposed to collectionshttp://www.goodreads.com/shelf
Hope this helps!
Christina wrote: "I believe a previous ROAR challenge went with dropping them, so I!"The ruling with the previous ROAR challenge was you could count them or not as long as you were consistant.
lol...I had to scroll down significantly to find a book I hadn't read...since i'm on a big no re-read kick because of the amount of books I have
Great mid-month challenge. I've been waiting for an excuse to read Midnight Sun, and Speak is on my LOST list, so I can't go wrong either way.
The date to begin the challenge book by is ... what?

IIRC - its within a week of the mid-month being posted...i was already planning on starting the book sometime this week, so it just got moved up the pile and i'll start tonight - i'm going to do One Foot in the Grave
Dee is correct. You have seven days to begin reading your chosen book. You don't have to finish reading the book in that time period - just as long as you have started reading it within that week.
I will do the same as Dee and bump up The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, which is on my list for this month.
I just picked up The Handmaid's Tale from the library, which is already on my May ROAR and fits the mid-month challenge too. YAY!

Thanks. Now I know. So many conversations happen multi times and in different threads that sometimes I don't know which was was up. I actually checked a thread before posting that comment :-/ Though, I couldn't tell you how to get back to it! It probably wasn't an official thread including moderators though :-P

I loved that book! Enjoy!! :)
As for the mid-month challenge...I'm already reading
The Hobbit so that works out for me. Definitely a top read amongst the friends :)

2. 30 points: LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Pride Month as declared by Barack Obama on 1 June 2009. "The movement has three main premises: that people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, that diversity is a gift, and that sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered"
Read a book about this movement / written by LGBT authors / contained LGBT characters.
Note: a number of other countries also celebrate in June (eg. Canada, etc) but a few celebrated in other times of the year

3. Spelling Bee (31 May - 2 June 2011): We love our spelling / reading games so choose a word from this list and read a book (your choice of title / author names but be consistent for the one word)
a. words with 5 letters or less: 20 points per book; OR
b. words with 6-10 letters: 20 points per book for the first 5 letters then 50 points per book for additional letter/s; OR for the Really Overly Ambitious
c. words with more than 10 letters: 20 points per book for the first 5 letters then 50 points per book for additional letter/s PLUS double (2x) your points upon completion
Maximum of 5 books per challenge rule is overrulled in this instance.
Example for option b: 'misspell' (8 letters): (20x5) + (50x3) = 250 points
Example for option c: 'interesting' (11 letters): [(20x5) + (50x6)] x2 = 800 points
4. 20 points: Opposites: Different parts of the world are experiencing different seasons. Let's celebrate our differences by reading seasonal books (by cover / word in title) of where you are located. For example, if you are in the US, read a summer-y covered book or book with 'summer' in the title OR if you are in Oz, read a winter-y covered book or book with 'winter' in the title.
For 100 bonus points: Read 5 books to celebrate all seasons: summer, winter, autumn / fall, spring... and to make up to 5 books: 'tropics' (for word in title: 'tropic' or 'tropical' acceptable) or 'season' (seasons, seasonal, etc acceptable)
5. 20 points: Father's Day: Read books you have gifted / are giving to a father* OR books of interests** to them.
*this can be your own father, your partner / father of your child, your father in law, etc... essentially any father figure you know
**It can be books on cars or camping or martial arts etc... wherever their interests lay
NOTE: Please do not post any questions until Msg #2 has been reserved by Luann for mid-month, thanks!
