Honolulu question

I read this a while back, and I'm trying to remember the name and details of the system Jin and her friends used to pool their resources and start businesses. I'm thinking it's called "kaya" but a Google search does not give me any useful result.

Can anyone help me look it up? I don't have a copy of the book since I just borrow from the public library.
