Laurie Armstrong After reading a few Amish books, I really would like to learn how to quilt. Is it just me? Does anyone else feel the need to learn a new skill whether it's quilting, gardening, or actually learning how to live a more self-sustaining life?

Diane U (djuseless) I also quilt but I have been quilting for about 10 years. I think it's cool that you take a full piece of fabric, cut it up and sew it back together! LOL!

Actually, I have several quilts posted on my blog if you would like to take a peek!

Laurie Armstrong Wow! How did you ladies learn?

Diane U (djuseless) I pick up things easily so I learned from a book. I did the log cabin quilt from a book by Eleanor Burns. I loved it because the book is just that pattern and has all the measurements for any size imaginable. It had simple step-by-step instructions that I followed. I would highly recommend any of her books but definitely start with that pattern since it is just strips.

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'd love to learn to quilt some day! At the moment I've been starting to knit (my mum taught me to knit when I was about 9 but I didn't actually get into knitting until recently) and I've been making lots of different squares to make into a blanket. Something about working with your hands and being creative can be really fun, can't it? I'm going to stick with making this blanket for now but I think I'd like to try quilting when I've finished the blanket :)

Adina Senft | 26 comments I love to quilt, too! As a matter of fact, in my September 2011 book, The Wounded Heart, the characters are making a quilt ... and the instructions to make the same quilt will be in the back of every book in the trilogy.

Which means I have to write the instructions ::gulp:: Who knew there was so much math in quilting?!

Laurie Armstrong Wow, I wish there was some way the quilting ladies in this group could give the rest of us lessons. :)

I'd love to give lessons if people lived closer to me!

I'll make sure my hubby is not around or no one will get any pie! LOL! He loves it!

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Love the idea! An Amish convention :D You never know, some day in the future me or the hubby (to be) may get a great job offer Stateside and hop over the pond... and I would definitely organise such an event if I were over there with you guys! :)

Diane, we can send the men out to the barn to muck out the horses!

message 14: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) Well if it is at my house, there is no barn or horses but they could go outside and kill mosquitos! LOL!

Sarah (misscalico) | 128 comments What a neat idea! Like the Amish "vrolijks"!

I learned to quilt when I was nine. My friend and I quilted one block apiece each month for a year... they came out lopsided but I just call them all humble squares! :)

I often wish I could sew better... it's a very practical skill.
