We have been to Santa Fe once before, maybe 10 years ago. I’d recommend a visit to Museum Hill, where there are four museums. Two on Indian art and culture, Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian and Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. I remember seeing a fantastic display of pricelesss Indian baskets at one of them. There’s also the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art.

But the most fantastic of all is Museum of International Folk Art. Much of it is a collection of folk art miniature figures from one collector. Hundreds of them, thousands of them, not lined in museum-like rows, but all set up in tableau after tableau, here a wedding, there a funeral, here a parade... It’s hard to realize this is only a portion of this collector’s stuff. I was utterly charmed, overwhelmed by the numbers, a new and delightful scene around every corner. The Museum website regrettably doesn’t begin to give you a clue of what this is like. I’ve truly never seen anything like it.

Here’s what Frommer’s has to say about it This branch of the Museum of New Mexico may not seem quite as typically Southwestern as other Santa Fe museums, but it's the largest of its kind in the world. With a collection of some 130,000 objects from more than 100 countries, it's my favorite city museum, well worth an hour or two of perusing. It was founded in 1953 by the Chicago collector Florence Dibell Bartlett, who said, "If peoples of different countries could have the opportunity to study each other's cultures, it would be one avenue for a closer understanding between men."

I see that there’s also a café on Museum Hill. And there’s a bus leaving from the central plaza every thirty-five minutes.

Unfortunately the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, near the central plaza, will be closed during the time of our visit.

Lynn | 2392 comments Thanks, Ruth. Museum Hill sounds like a prime candidate for a Saturday morning activity, followed by lunch at the cafe. If we have a couple of cars we wouldn't even have to wait for the bus. I just found a car rental for $8.99 a day that weekend (even with taxes it's only around $55 total) through CarRentals.com so I could help transport.

Andrea (andreag) | 79 comments I'm up for whatever folks want to do... I'll have my car as well, so I can help with transport to Museum Hill.

Jane | 2258 comments Ruth,

Let's do it! There should be three cars. Those of us who are riding can help pay for gas.

What should we do Saturday afternoon?

Jane

Ruth | 11111 comments Maybe we could do our readings Sat aft? We may like a chance to sit down after walking around all those museums.

Sherry | 8261 comments I think that's a good idea. Saturday afternoon seems like the day we usually do the readings.

Jane | 2258 comments I was thinking that Friday afternoon would be a good day for the readings after lunch because of the morning walking tour. However, it doesn't matter to me. What would you like to do on Friday afternoon?

Jane

Ruth | 11111 comments Either day is okay with me. I forgot we'd be walking about on Friday.
