I agree with some of these. Diamond Age isn't my favorite Stephenson, but it's alright. Red Mars? I don't think so.

Got to say I think they are slighting some good hard scifi authors by not including Gregory Benford , Greg Bear or David Brin. I also wouldn't have pick their choice for Clarke. Also how was Larry Niven not there either.

In addition to "Zzzzzzzzzzz..." there's too much whining and unrequited love and jealousy and... We send our best and brightest out for a space opera, and it turns into a soap opera. No need to leave the planet for that.

I don't see how 'The Time Machine" fits in this category. Even today it's still pretty much a fantasy as when it was written.
