Robert E. Howard Readers discussion

Of the two stories for the next Robert E. Howard Readers Group Read, this one is about knight crusader, Cormac Fitzgeoffrey. To be found in The Robert E. Howard Omnibus, Gates of Empire and to read online at Wikisource.

I haven't read this one, so I'm hoping for a nice action-packed story of slaying and mayhem!

I have read this and it is the best finished Cormac story hope you enjoy it.

I've finally started this one - very good so far - shouldn't take too long to finish as the story's really rattling along.

I hope to have some company out there, otherwise this discussion will be a monologue!

Okay, so I was enjoying this story - pretty typical fare for REH: Gigantic hero, Celtic origins, black hair/blue eyes: All that and nothing wrong with it. Then the end blew me away!

(view spoiler)[Cormac evidences racial/religious intolerance through the story, and REH is undoubtedly historically accurate in that portrayal. Then, enter Saladin: Cormac views him with suspicion and contempt - a treacherous Muslim dog, etc. But Saladin proves to be courteous, honourable and civilised and a shamefaced (well, somewhat) Cormac is left feeling like a rough barbarian.

An unexpected and enlightened end which raises the story above the usual hack-and-slash adventure that people might expect of Howard's work. (hide spoiler)]

This is why I like being in this Group - discovering little gems that, in truth, I should have found long ago. I'm going to read the rest of The Robert E. Howard Omnibus now!
