Cats discussion

In the nineties,probably lower to mid, I recall checking out a book from my middle school library. I don't think it was specifically for young adults, as I recall it being quite fairly thick. I do not recall the title. I know in the beginning of the book, the cat or cats plurals owner had possibley passed on, they couldn't open the canned goods. They decided to strike out on their own, and ran into a society of cats. All I can pretty much remember. I believe he was made to rename, and the names were a bit odd. That is all the info I have, but recall ebing quite intrigued by it. I never finished reading it due to some sports, and it always has stayed in my mind. Anyone have any ideas?

I think that book is called Tailchasers Song by Tad Williams. See if that is right.
