Author newbies!Special tips for our growing author population. ;) After you've added your books with their series and added your website, blog feed, bio, and perhaps a pic to your author profile, try these tips:
* Events. If you have a blog and you're hosting a giveaway, etc., readers want to know! Announce it in "events," accessed on the right on your home page. You can also find your friends' and favorite authors' events here. Events appear on author pages.
* Giveaways. You can also add your book to the Goodreads giveaways in the "explore" menu to get a lot more exposure. If you have a freebie, post it in "ebooks," also in the "explore" menu. Giveaways appear on the book's page as well. A freebie will have a download link on the book page.
* Quotes. Very effective in attracting readers if you have any good quotes to offer, a good action, romance, or funny line that encapsulates the tone of your novel. Quotes appear on the book page and the author's profile.
* Writing. Post an excerpt of your novel in "writing." It will appear on your profile.
* Quizzes. It doesn't hurt, especially if you're book is intended for a young audience, to post quizzes. Quizzes appear on book pages.
* Series. Readers like 'em. To add a book to your series or create a new series, click "edit details" on the book page, then "add new series." Add the title of the series, check "numbered." Then add any other books to the series and number them accordingly. They'll appear neatly on your profile.
Make friends, but be aware some users are wary of authors pimping their books, LOL.
ACRONYMS!Whosawhatsit?! Did someone post something in a thread that looks like an alien tongue? It might be reader-speak. LOL. Here are some popular acronyms:

Once you're settled in and comfortable, learn GR's other cool features. Recommendations. Ask for a recommendation or answer one. Accessible on the right from the home page.
Widgets. Flash and Javascript widgets displaying books, quotes, and so on are available from "my account" accessed at your home page on the right.
Apps. Download the GR app, connect your updates to your Twitter, Facebook, or Kindle, or publish your reviews to your blog. Accessible from "my account."
Book_links. When you're browsing books on GR, you see links underneath the book's description where you can purchase or borrow the book. Customize these links to link to your local library, favorite bookstore, and so on. Accessible from "my account."
This is all great info! I've tried to find out some stuff and often give up and go somewhere else to post stuff. Then got that email from the owner saying no more sig lines (not that I remember to add one) which is a bit intimidating. (wry grin). Thank you SO much!
No prob, Pauline! We want everyone to feel welcome, and GR has so many features, a lot of them hidden or unexplained, that it's easy to get overwhelmed. If you have any questions, etc., feel free to ask and I'll try and help as much I can. :)
I added an event to my feed, but didn't send it out to my "friends." After two emails from goodreads about authors over promo-ing, I don't want to offend. It's hard to know what to do, because I don't like hard promotion myself, but I do like hearing about fun stuff. LOL! Its rather like navigating a mine field. Need to organize my book shelves now, and get it updated! thanks again! I will probably be back. lol
LOL. That's true. To be honest, sometimes reader-bloggers end up spamming too with their giveaways. I think authors have more justification at least, LOL. I would start with a general update talking about your event, and then if you get a positive response maybe next time you can send the notice out to friends.
Just joined. I've had an author's page on Goodreads since 2009. I've written two science fiction romance and just released a paranormal romance. I currently working on another paranormal romance before I get back to my Coletti Warlord series.Gail
OMG!!! Hello Gail, I have to tell you, I really liked your Just My Luck book :). I'll read them all!
Thanks! My books - Just My Luck, The Warlord's Comeuppance and The Nasty Vamp are a bit different - lots of humor.Gail
I don't know if this is the proper format but - I need VOTES!! The Nasty Vamp is running neck and neck with Death Angel in the polls at www.sizzlinghotbooks.net and I really need votes. I want to win this sucker!Gail
Hey Gail, good luck with the contest. In the future it might be better to post things like this in the Promotions folder, since this is more an informational thread about Goodreads.
Hi, I'm York, and I am a newbie (and male) to SFRomance or any romance...I just posted a more extensive note on the "introduce yourself" message board in this group. Please read that as I would like to read some good SFR or fantesy romance if this group covers that. Again I explain, more I my other post. I am also new to Goodreads and love it so far. So any tips for other groups or things I may want to see are welcome...
Thanks,
York

* Shelves. You can create as many "shelves" (tags) as you like to organize your books in "my books," everything from "beam-me-up-scottie" to "bizarro-fiction." You can choose to make these shelves sortable, if you want them numbered, e.g. "my-top-five" or exclusive, if you want another option beside "to-read" and "read". Feel free to add to the group bookshelf as well, accessed on the right on the group's home page.
* New releases and goodies. If you browse the "explore" menu, you'll find lists, giveaways, swaps, quizzes, quotes, original writing, and the "genres" pages! The scifi genre page has scifi new releases!
* Following. Follow authors! Do you read author blogs? Click "become a fan" on an author's page and you'll receive their blog posts in your updates. You can also follow users, for example, if you really enjoy one particular reviewer. Go to their profile and select "follow."
* Top friends. Your friends are filterable. You can edit "Top Friends" by clicking "friends" from the navigation bar. Your friends will never know, and you'll be able to choose whose updates you want to see regularly.
* Updates showing... Filter your home page. Choose to see author blogs or not, strictly reviews or status updates, updates from only top friends or updates from everyone and so on. From your Goodreads home page, select the "updates" tab and immediately underneath you'll see a dropdown menu of options ("showing")
* General updates. You can make "general updates" as well as progress updates in books you're reading. If you just found a really fun blog post from an author or a great sale you'd like to share, go to your home page and select "add a general update" on the right.
