Tamil Literature
I had read malayalam version of a tamil novel - I think it is chilapathikaram - not sure - along time back. It was an engrossing work
Thanks for the link mathi.. This would help all non-tamils to read Ponniyin selvan, one of the best historical fiction novel ever written in Tamil..
Smitha wrote: "I have already downloaded part 1 of the English version."I am sure you won't be disappointed. Ponniyin selvan has enough to keep you interested.
Recently I read two tamil books. Both are non fiction about Eelam Freedom Struggle (Yes, It is struggle for freedom). First one
, was a book by Tamilnathy, who is an Eelam immigrant. This book shows the real pain of being away from home and feeling stranger in your homeland.Second one,
, was by Fr. Jegath Gasper, that describes a lot of background about the struggle and the way LTTE was organised. The interviews of Prbhakaran and fellow Tigers was very well covered and making us wonder why do India hate them when they are expecting us to help them. Must read for all those who can read tamil to know reality of tamil struggle in Lanka.
Anbu, every time I read one of your reviews about tamil books I get angry because you write beautiful reviews that intrigue me but I already know that I can't never read those books. Argh!

I tried one or two Sandilyan's works.. They were ok read.. (true, Im expecting too much when I compare all the historical fictions with PS, but what to do? Kalki set the benchmark which no one could match.. :-))

Gods, Kings & Slaves: The Siege of Madurai
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...
War is coming... An ancient kingdom will meet a devastating new enemy
Peninsular India, fourteenth century. The Pandyan empire is at its peak, its enemies subdued and its people at peace. Having left behind his step-brother Sundar in the race to the throne, Crown Prince Veera Pandyan is set to rule from Madurai, reputed to be the richest city in the subcontinent. But invisible fractures within the kingdom threaten to destroy it, and a new enemy approaches, swifter than anyone can imagine.
In Delhi, Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s trusted general, the eunuch Malik Kafur, has trained his eyes on the distant south, fabled for its riches. A slave captured by the Khiljis, Kafur is renowned for his ambition and cunning. None, not even the mighty Mongols, have defeated him – no empire can withstand the trail of destruction he leaves in his wake. And all he wants is to see Madurai on its knees, its wealth pillaged, its temples destroyed.
As an ancient city combusts in flames of treachery, bloodlust and revenge, brother will battle brother, ambition will triumph over love, slaves will rise to rule, cities will be razed to dust, and the victor will be immortalized in history

Dear friend,
Don't download books, especially tamil books from Internet for free. Hope we don't disgrace the work of a writer.

Hi.. newbie to tamil reading actually.. and thought since this thread has been silent for long, should revive it :) Although I have read short stories that are mostly available in magazines, never got around to reading serious books. However, plan to change it this year with Ponniyan Selvan :) Have heard a lot about the poetical writing of Kalki from my dad, so am thrilled to read it finally!
Although before I embark on that I am picking up a few books by Devan. I know its not exactly literature but it sounds like fun books.
Would really like it if you could recommend some good light reads for me to get into first before I tackle Ponniyan Selvan :)
Does any tamil literature work describes the science behind Hindu culture.. If there is any book on that... Pls let me know...
This might not be what you're looking for, but I just launched my new book, Crooked Lines. Many of the scenes take place in Tamil Nadu, but the novel goes back and forth between India and the US. Not in the Tamil language of course.
Ya thank you holly...read your book's synopsis quite Interesting.. I will start reading your book in the near future...
I have downloaded an app for android. It is on thirukkural. It is fantastic. For each verse there is at least four to five meanings from different authors. I recommend it highly. Available in Play storehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/de...

Srividys. Ponniyin selvan is not going to be a tough read like shakespear. Dont have to use words "tackle" etc. Please take it up immediately, you will flow with it. Dont delay.
Additionally, from this week onwards, the magazine, kalki is starting serialising "ponniyin selvan"
