Crime and Punishment.I loathe that book. It was quite disappointing, especially since I was so excited to read it. I mean, it sounds like a haunting, well-crafted piece of psychological fiction. What it actually is, is confusing and boring. Really boring.
I attempted to read it on three separate occasions, and got maybe 25 pages further each time. I also fell asleep each time I sat down to read it. If that isn't the mark of a boring book, I don't know what is.
Moby Dick.
The only assigned book I never made it through. I did read Crime and Punishment (I agree it was horrible). I also remember draggin myself though Madame Bovary and Dante's Inferno. I think you are correct Neil --if English teachers didn't make us read them, no one would.

I LOVED Dante's Inferno - I wrote a big ol' research paper on it in college...but Dante's Inferno totally depends on which translation you get...
Crime and Punishment was a book Sereno picked for our summer reading list years ago- I still have it as a "to be read book" ( only got a 100 pages in, I found it this spring with my notes in it because I had to keep a list of names- was getting confused.) Maybe this summer will be the summer.

Its not horrible but I probably wouldn't read it for fun.

I'll start: I started reading Frankenstein last summer and made it through 150 of 200 pages. Then I stopped. I tried to pick it up again this summer and finish - it was only 50 more pages, after all - but I couldn't. Because I hate it.
If English teachers didn't make their students read it, no one would read Frankenstein. And the world would be a better place.
