Wow,

Logged on and saw that number and was amazed!

I hope all 800 are enjoying the group!

Nick

Cheri Howard | 25 comments Wow, nice!

I'm glad I found this group, I've gotten a lot of good book ideas for my to-read list!

message 3: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments Awesome! I just saw the 800 member milestone as well. I too am very fond of and grateful that I found this group to commune with others who escape to a different time-space continuum or alternate universe or ... you get the picture.

message 4: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 185 comments There may be 800 members signed up, but WHERE THE HECK ARE THEY??!!! All you lurkers out there, COME ON!!! Surely there are more of us than just the dozen or so folks I see posting regularly that have interesting things to say!

A discussion group only works if people participate, and so far, though we do have good participation, we need to hear from many more of the members.

message 5: by bsc (new)

bsc (bsc0) | 250 comments And we get like 100 or more votes in the polls. Why vote if you aren't going to participate?

message 6: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 3 comments Just a thought . . .

Im a new member (and a current lurker), and thought this group looked great. I even picked up October's books so I can participate. However, since I have not read the current books, as of right now I just skim the daily email to see what the conversation is like.

I have always found it helpful to be a lurker on a forum before a participant in order to "learn the local customs."

Ill be back for a little Heinlein next month!

message 7: by Rusty (new)

Rusty (rustyshackleford) I’m just not as knowledgeable about these genres, especially sci-fi (I had never even heard of cyberpunk or steampunk until a couple of months ago), so I just tend to read and learn from you guys. I do enjoy this club, though, and I’ve liked most of the books we’ve read.

I’ll try to be more vocal.

message 8: by Steven (new)

Steven (skia) | 104 comments I have to admit that I intended to be more of a poster instead of the lurker that I've been, but have had way too much going on of late to be able to read the books. I should be posting more recently, but I've always believed in the quote by Abraham Lincoln "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." I've lived quite a bit of my life by that and it is a hard habit to quit.

message 9: by Roger (new)

Roger (rogerbixby) | 90 comments I can tell you that I post when I can and when I feel I have something to contribute to the conversation. I won't post just to post. I also don't spend all of my time here, life gets in the way and several weeks may pass before I come back and see what's been discussed.

message 10: by Lianna (new)

Lianna Vigil (liannallama) | 40 comments Hi! I've been subscribed for a few months due to a friend's recommendation, but I have mostly deleted the emails because I have just been to busy to read the threads. I have recently started lurking and actually reading the threads! I am excited about the Heinlein (one of my favorites!) and the other book looked good too (of course I promptly forgot what book it was, LOL! Once I catch onto this board I will try to post more, LOL!

message 11: by Angie (new)

Angie | 342 comments Ben that is a funny comment... I find it funny because I am a moderator in 3 groups and that happens in all of them! :)

message 12: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 30 comments LOL...Lurker here. I mostly read and belong to this group to get ideas for new books that I otherwise would just pass on by. I do post occasionally to something I may or may not agree with, but other that that, just like getting everyone's take.

message 13: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (vargasgirl) | 8 comments Dito to what Roger said!

message 14: by Gbina (last edited Sep 19, 2008 07:39AM) (new)

Gbina | 20 comments Ditto to Steven! Every time I open my mouth before thinking I make a fool of myself. And if I think before opening my mouth, I usually decide it is best to keep it shut.

Lurking is fun though! Getting all kinds of ideas for my TBR pile. :)

message 15: by Kristjan (new)

Kristjan (booktroll) | 200 comments People participate as it strikes them; even though we have 100 people voting; how many line up behind the winner ... if your vote doesn't get picked, I think a fair number of readers are happy waiting for the next month instead of getting a book that don't think that they will enjoy. Even if they do eventually read the book, it might actually be after most of the discussion has finished.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I just want to blow a kiss to all of the lurkers. It makes me feel special to think that somebody might actually read my comments.

Of course, it's also nice to get in a tussle about books, so chip in if you like.

message 17: by K.S.R. (new)

K.S.R. (kareyshane) | 6 comments I'm another lurker. I really enjoy this group because it's a bona fide book lovers group with fantastic comments from all you thoughtful, smart people, and it leaves me wishing I had more hours in the day to read all the good books you discuss.

I guess I hesitate to comment, because I'm a fantasy reader and not sci-fi. I feel like I'm not a full-fledged member since I'm only halfway in. :) Although, Simon Vance who narrated the Dune series is doing Secret Speakers, So does that count?

message 18: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Murrell | 604 comments And not quite 12 years later, the number is closer to 27,000. Proof that all great things start small.

aw, how things change! this is a gem of a thread haha

(lots of affection for lurkers, people who message me about books they've found, people who love voting and of course all our commenters! )
