am i crazy or have we never had a film thread?

Has anyone heard about Solar Grandmothers?

We have never had a film thread and I've only just discovered it now!! There are stacks of films we could be discussing... Has anybody seen Totsi? I haven't seen it but I'd love to hear from people who have.

that's one i've wanted to see as well.

I saw it and loved it, but that was right as it first came out in Scotland and so I couldn't discuss it in anymore detail.

Uuh... :-( now we have to find someone else who can remember... ;)

hey! there is going to be a new documentary about Mama Africa!

Oh I bet there are tons we could list here and even break down by Country. I will start making a list of ones that come to mind.

I saw it when it first came out and thought it was really good.

I saw Tsotsi while I was living in South Africa. It is bleak and sad and excellent. Totally worthwhile. Just don't watch it if you're already depressed.

Hehe, that is a good point! I will need to watch it on a happy day with lots of sunshine (except... then I'd be outside enjoying the sunshine...)

Yup - that description nails it, Katy!

One of my absolute all-time favorites is "Keïta: The Heritage of the Griot" (Dany Kouyaté, Burkina Faso), which integrates the story of Sundiata into a modern boy's coming-of-age. (I always show this when I teach Sundiata and the students truly love it.)

I also lovelovelove the award-winning "Binta and the Great Idea." Wonderful!

Another great is "La petite vendeuse de Soleil" (The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun, Djibril Diop Mambéty).

I saw this article on the cast of Half of a Yellow Sun. That was the first I'd heard about them turning it into a film! It is still on my TBR list, but I have several friends who claim this as their favorite book.

i just finished that book. i really, really liked it (although i wouldn't call it my favorite book). interesting that they are making a film! i think it would make a really excellent film.

I also really enjoyed this book (as I have most of her work), and glad to see this will be a film. I am not much of a movie goer but will go see this film.

Has anyone seen: how to steal 2 million; I think it is a south african movie?
