Richard Laymon Fans discussion
FAVE LAYMON
I LOVED "Endless Night" and "The Woods are Dark." I haven't read all of his books -trying :)- but I love his writing style.
Favorites... I'd have to say Funland and The Stake. Least favorite...haven't really come across any yet. I can honestly say that Laymon was one of those talents that I truly enjoy everything I've come across so far.
I haven't read all of his books yet, but so far my favorite is Night in the Lonesome October.
I have only read two Laymon books, so this question is really easy to answer: Favorite - Body Rides
Least Favorite - Darkness, Tell Us
But I'll do better than that. I have not totally decided that I like Laymon. Darkness, Tell Us, was pretty bad. It smacked of an old guy bungling with writing from the perspective of college kids. that said, the story was fun and followable.
Body Rides was based on a great premise, an exciting premise - a premise that I, in fact, have been planning a book around. He left me thinking that my foray into Laymon (Darkness, Tell Us) had me started off on the wrong foot.
So I joined this group and here solicit your suggestions on giving him another chance. I am considering in particular "Come Out Tonight," as Julie ranked it with Body Rides. If anyone has a "read this and you will be convinced of Laymon," please suggest and I will give it a shot! I appreciate it!
Ok, off topic i know but i didnt know where else to ask lol, where is Midnights lair? i couldn't find it here

Okay, so I know it was a year ago that you recommended those series, but I read them both, and you are right, they were great. I love it when you get to continue with a plot line you are enjoying... As for other Laymon, I am pacing myself. I can totally see everyone's point about never getting any new Laymon... Very sad.
Hi everyone I'm new here. I read all of Laymon's novels except Cuts in the last year or so. I reckon his best ones are Flesh, In the Dark, Funland, After Midnight, Body Rides and Island - all are classics. I wasn't so keen on Beware, Among the Missing and Bite, but most of his others are well worth a look too.
Just breaking into his books. Have read Midnights Lair, Into The Fire, After Midnight, Travelling Vampire Show and The Woods Are Dark. All of those are very good, but After Midnight is the best of those.
If you like The Traveling Vampire Show, you chould check out Bite - another vampire quest-type story of Laymon's. I also recommend Beast House, Into The Dark, and Island. Beast House is actually the 2nd of the 4 Beast House chronicles, but The Cellar (1st novel) is not nearly as good.

Beware was well below par for him. Only one I was tempted to leave unfinished
I'm a big fan of the beast house series. My other favs are Savages and Out are the lights.
I haven't read anything by him that I didn't like.
Like many others, I loved the Beast House books. RL has a style of his own and he's so unique I find it difficult to pick a favourite. If pressed, I would probably say Night in the Lonesome October just because it's so bizarre and sums RL up perfectly.
I think I will have to read Night In The Lonesome October next. It's settled. Anyone like In The Dark? I was thinking of cracking that one, too.
I like NILO for my own reasons...I can see how people wouldnt like it...yea in the dark was good as well and worth reading
Like Matthew, I can see why some don't like NILO, it's not really horror, just an odd story. I think that's why I like it so much - Laymon wrote some great horror books but also some great stories. NILO feels like he just decided to write, like , "What the hell I'll give this a try" and let his imagination loose.
I really loved Into The Fire for that reason. Laymon's books put me in the story and I can't get out.
I just put out a book it's like laymon but with a tuch of sci-fi it will be free on 4-20 so I can get it out to the ppl. and laymon fan's are my ppl.

Jimi wrote: "that was my suspicion on the name. is it the same or part"The Glory Bus and Into the Fire are the same novel. Another Laymon book, Dark Mountain, was also published as Tread Softly. It's bloody annoying when publishers do this!

Hell yeah! Looking forward to that, Jimi.
Argh there are so many to choose but I would have to say my fave was 'Quake', this was the first book I have read that was completely insane and graphic it's stuck in my mind ever since.'The woods are dark' would be my least due to the story being quite lazy in comparison to his others. It's by no means a poor book as its great for a laymon fix but it's the only reason I can think of to choose a least favourite.
Not one of his books have disappointed me yet!
I didn't mind Woods Are Dark, though it was sparely written compared to his others. I read the restored version, though. I have heard the one originally published was missing half the content. What a travesty.
I really liked The Woods Are Dark. Apparently the original was butchered by a narrow minded publisher. Laymon's daughter restored it back to its full glory after his death. Like Adam, I read the restored version.
