I love seeing this thread pop up!! lol!!from the shelves, i have this tenative list of books that I own already
Chasin' Eight (for sure read - other group challenge)
Logan (for sure read - other group challenge)
Brokeback Mountain
Tracker's Sin
Pieces of Sky
Doc: A Novel (audiobook)
My Antonia (audiobook)
Comanche Moon (found this one and the other two in the series on ebay for $10) so its on its way to me
OMG, Arlene. This is SO perfect as I am participating in a challenge to read from genres I don't usually read from in July, and Western is on the list. I will look to see what I have in this shelf. For sure, I know I have:
True Grit by Charles Portis
Sackett's Land: The Sacketts by Louis L'Amour
The Blessing Way by Tony Hillerman
True Grit by Charles Portis
Sackett's Land: The Sacketts by Louis L'Amour
The Blessing Way by Tony Hillerman
Well, what I read will depend on what I can fit into ROAR. I'll have to wait to see the July challenges!
Thanks Lyn for pointing out Arlene had started the thread, and Arlene thanks for starting it. I'm super swamped right now with the end of school, counting down the days :0) 8 more days to go woo hoo!!!!
I saw Western and panicked slightly then remembered that I have Riders of the Purple Sage on my TBR. Now I have an excuse to give it a go.Thanks to the group for getting me out of my comfort zone once again :)

For sure I'll be reading The Man from Stone Creek, since I can double-challenge this one, and hopefully will also get to Apache Summer. And I have two more Catherine Anderson books to try for as well, since I loved Comanche Moon & Annie's Song so much.I'm still working on my June Literature choice - The Tenth Circle is too depressing to stay with for very long at a time, but it paints a very realistic picture.
So on Monday I was trying to pull a book off a shelf in my bedroom when the whole shelf started to tip! Ack!!!!! Read all about it and see some photos on my blog!http://indayarlene.blogspot.com/2011/...

Seems lke a fitting ending for a PAS member to be crushed to death by a giant bookshelf, but I am still relieved to know that you didn't fall victim! Happy Reading!!!!
Well, would you believe that the only Louis L'Amore book I have is not a Western? (I think I read all his westerns years ago anyway.) But, I did find two books on my shelves by Margaret Coel that are in the western genre: The Story Teller and The Ghost Walker.
I found a Tony-Hillerman-readlike list! It's at
http://www.goodreads.com/genres/reada... Several of them look good, and most seem to be on the western shelf. (Of course, for those of you who haven't read all of Hillerman's own yet, I'd always recommend starting with him.)

I can say that Lori Armstong's books are good - No Mercy and Mercy Kill - she also writes under the name Lorelei James who's erotic romance are on the list
I love to read the occasional western, although I haven't in a while so I'm glad for the excuse! For July, I'm looking at:* Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey
* Either Buffalo Girls or Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry - or both. I couldn't believe Streets of Laredo wasn't already on my list. I thought I had read ALL of the Lonesome Dove books, but at the time I was marking them, I must have thought I hadn't read that one! So we'll see - it might be a reread if I do get to it. :)
* Love's Enduring Promise by Janette Oke and possibly more in that series.
its been a while since i've read any of the janette oke books...i might throw one of those on the pile too
I am looking at The Last Crossing and Bittersweet and I will probably pick up a Louis L'Amour. My choice will be somewhat dependent on the ROAR challenges.
I enjoyed My Antonia very much, I have a copy of O Pioneers! which may get dusted off next month as well.

I'm working on several challenges across various groups right now, but I will try to fit in at least one from this list. Because I'm looking for cross-challenge qualifiers, most of my choices lean to the fantastical or weird west corners of the Western shelf.(the most likely choice) The Half-Made World - Felix Gilman
Iron Council - China Miéville
Territory - Emma Bull
The Sisters Brothers - Patrick deWitt
If I weren't otherwise engaged, I'd add:
True Grit - Charles Portis
Doc: A Novel - Mary Doria Russell

I had to read My Antonia in college and I really enjoyed it. Happy reading! :)

If you get to this one please write a review so I can decide whether or not to pursue it further.
Okay, here are my choices for Westerns:Riders of the Purple Sage (because it was my dad's favorite book when he was a boy
andGunman's Rhapsody
If anyone is looking for a suggestion I would recommend Lonesome Dove and How the West Was Won
Good shelf choice, Not one I have a lot of experience in so this should be an interesting month.
I have May There Be a Road and The Great Taos Bank Robbery and Other Indian Country Affairs
on my bedroom bookshelf so I will read them.
I'm going to listen to Lonesome Dove but I don't know if I can get it all in by the end of the month. I'll also be reading High Country Bride (McKettrick Cowboys, #1) and that I'll definitely be able to fit in.

I'll do that. I found a way to fit it into my challenges, and my library has it available.
Another author that has been recommended to me is Wyoming writer C.J. Box. I am going to see if I can find his books at the library.
i've not read him, but he has come recommended to me by some friends in another group - his Joe Pickett series specifically
I think I'll read
Creed's Law.Update: I've been reading "Creed's Law" and having a "heck of a lot fun" reading it.

I'm glad you posted that Mimi - I wouldn't have known it was a western and it has been lurking under my bed for way too long!!!
