And he's going to voice Smaug and Necromancer in "The Hobbit?" Do they want to make my little nerd heart explode? He is supposedly doing the motion capture of Smaug as well. If there is a glimmer, a flicker of Benedict Cumberbatch in Smaug I will be buying the action figure. Ah, who I am kidding I will be buying the action figures regardless.

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments So it'll be like Sherlock and Watson are fighting in the end... WOW. Yes! That will be awesome. But I might not make it to the end because I might have a heart attack from the sheer amazingness of it all.

message 3: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments I know! Sherlock and Watson LARPing. haha. I am very amused by the thought of Sherlock's weakness being in his belly, and that he lives under the lonely mountain.

Oh, and there will be showing of his movie Third Star in July around the U.S. http://www.frombritainwithlove.org/ve...

message 4: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments Weird, I haven't heard of that. There's this other movie he's gonna be in called Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, based on John LeCarre's novel. I'm reading it right now, and I think it's coming out in November.

message 5: by C.O. (new)

C.O. Bonham (dolphin18cb) | 54 comments Agreed that Benedict Cumberbatch is really talented.
If you havn't seen it yet you should find the BBC Series "The Last Enemy."

message 6: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments I saw "The Last Enemy." It didn't grab me, but I don't think I generally enjoy government conspiracy/paranoia/surveillance stuff. Still watched it all the way through because you know, Benedict is in it.

On the other hand, I was surprised by how entertaining I found "The Ends of the Earth." I never thought I would be able to enjoy a historical boat drama, but I did. My boyfriend got into it too, and he is hard to please when it comes to TV and movies.

I love "Atonement" even though Cumberbatch is a creep in it. I like watching him in "Starter for 10" a lot more. He is HILARIOUS. And Mark Gatiss is in it. MUST SEE!!!

message 7: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Oh, and here's the trailer for Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy. It looks pretty good! It's all, like seventies. ha, imagine cumberbatch in 70s hair. And it's very "spy movie suspense" with a ton of british actors, which is to be expected.

Sammy, how is the book? I picked it up a few weeks ago. I honestly have never read a spy book before in my life.

and another one

message 9: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments Tinker Tailor Soldier is pretty good so far, but a bit slow to start. I have to admit I'm a little impatient with books like that so I put it down for a little bit, but now I really want to pick it back up and finish it! It's not very spy-ish like a James Bond novel, mainly because the main character is a retired spy, and he isn't very keen into going back to find the mole.

message 10: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Benedict interview for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy here. It's kinda spoilery; it told me something I did not know about the character.

message 11: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments On imdb.com it said that Marvel Studios might be considering Benedict Cumberbatch for the role of Doctor Strange in the upcoming 2013 movie... OooOoOooo...

message 12: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments OMG Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange will make me die. You know what I would kill to see? Him as Dream if they ever make a Sandman movie. I WILL KILL. Seriously.

message 13: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments Maybe he will be! The article I was reading said that Marvel was considering him for an upcoming film in 2013, but the only two announced films for that year so far are Doctor Strange and Ant Man. But I'm pretty sure it was for Doctor Strange. He could never be Ant Man!

message 14: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments I confess I am a bit worried about Cumberbatch trying to recreate the classic Alec Guinness role of Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Although he had no trouble making Sherlock his own after so many came before him , so I should not worry.
Those of you who have never seen the original with Guinness are in for a treat. (Made for BBC in the early '80s, I believe) You really should check it out; he is one of a kind.
Lately I have read a lot of discussions complaining about why directors always try to remake a classic movie (Psycho, King Kong, Star Trek, you name it.) I always felt that way myself; why try to recreate perfection? Then I started thinking about legitimate stage productions (you know, on stage, not in a movie.) Stage actors (and folk singers, for that matter) practice the art of repeating good material, making it their own. It is a legitimate endeavor. So I am going to give Cumberbatch an open mind on Tinker Tailor.

That's a very good point! I wonder why films and recorded music like rock differ from classic/folk and stage work in public perception... that they shouldn't be performed repeatedly by different people. You often hear derision about "covers" and "remakes," as if they were less than, creatively, works that are seen as originals. Probably because the originals are recorded? The work is pretty much static? But that doesn't answer the question of why remakes are perceived of as less by default...

message 16: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments Joanna, I think it is a failure of imagination on the part of the audience. The habit of consuming works as an audience makes us forget to approavh works of art appreciatively from the point of view of the artist. To imagine where the artist was trying to go instead of wishing for a familiar pattern.

Did you ever see that movie about jackson pollack where he says, " no one looks at a garden and asks what does it mean? They just appreciate it for whay it is."

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Trailer for Wreckers which is out next week (Nov 16) in the UK

Review from Variety. They say it's "chilly," but well acted. Also the weather in its universe is oppressively gloomy or maybe just English.

Photos from Wreckers.

I think I may skip this one. I can only take so many "pensive gazes downward" in a single movie. I believe it needs an exploding tree or two.

message 19: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments Gosh, I agree with you, but I don't know if I will be able to resist seeing Cumberbatch in ANY movie.
Notice in the picture above how his beard is red. In Sherlock, they dyed his hair black. Oh, it is so tantalizing waiting for British films to percolate their way across the ocean..

Sort of a cross between a "how I spent my vacation" school essay, and a product endorsement by a celebrity, but didn't it break your heart when he wrote, "Never go to Paradise alone" ---I would have joined him! So would you!!
Nice pictures too. Ahhh, now it is even harder to wait for the next Sherlock!

Benedict Cumberbatch Lands Villain Role In 'Star Trek 2'

:O
He is going to be in every nerd thing ever

message 23: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments From that picture in the link (long charcoal overcoat, trilby hat, comfy shoes, and a slinky silver blouse with side buttons!--) do you get the impression that that is his Star Trek costume? (well, the slinky shirt, at least). If he is going to play a villain, it is a villian with dubious style!

Whatever...I don't care if they dress him in a paper bag, they've got me!

Haha, Daily Mail probably chose something sparkly on purpose. Hmmm... I think I would like Benedict Cumberbatch in a paper bag myself, too. I'll take him to go!

I know, that was awful joke.

He's going to be an alien right? OMG what sort of star trek alien villian is he going to be!!! Klingon? Borg? OMG BORG. Actually I don't know how Borg will work but it would be awesome.

OMG what if they reboot the Khan storyline and he is...

KHAAAAAAAAAN

My boyfriend was like, "He should be an Andorian!" He teases me; I don't think i could take it if Benedict was blue with antennae.

message 25: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments Benedict as KHAN? Wow; I have to think about that. I am remembering the STar Trek movie where Ricardo Montalban was Kahn, right? "The Wrath of Khan." And he certainly was full of wrath.

Now Benedict would be a more sly, acerbic villain, I think. He does not have that macho Latin thing going on; I could almost visualize him, say, as the Sheriff of NOttingham in Robin Hood (think Alan Rickman...)

Well, this should be most entertaining. Wonder how long we will have to wait to see this new Star Trek? I must say, the first one was very gratifying; for once the revival or whatever you call something made 30 years later did not disappoing.

I haven't seen any of those yet! I have Amazing Grace on my netflix queue, but I think I will wait for War Horse on bluray. After Sherlock, I think my favorite thing he's been in is Cabin Pressure.

Silvio111 | 123 comments Can we discuss Benedict's role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy here? Anybody interested in comparing his character to the written version? If not appropriate, please let me know. Just saw the movie and really liked it! It totally stood up to the original Alec Guinness version. Cumberbatch's role, Peter Guillam (which in the book is repeatedly referred to, in Homereque ritual repetition, as "Smiley's cupbearer) was given a slightly different cast.
If anyone indicates interest, I will elaborate.

SPOILERS for TINKER TAILOR
I know the change you are referring to! I like the way you put it, ha. I... don't know why they did that, honestly. It's not bad. But I don't see what the use of making him gay gave the plot, or even character development. I totally have to see the Alec Guinness version!

message 31: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments Joanna,
Well it's interesting. THe Peter Guillam character in the books is desperately pursuing his co-worker (I forget her name) after a substantial period of time where he was courting a rather bohemian woman who kind of let him on. So he was definitely heterosexual in the books.

It is Bill Haydon who is portrayed as having had a relationship with Jim Prideau (back in university) in the books.

I thought it was particularly tantalizing to portray Peter Guillam as having a gay relationship in the movie because Smiley tells him, "If there are any loose ends you need to tie up, now is the time" right before the big push to capture the mole. I did not see what difference it would make whether Guillam had a boyfriend; did he think it would be a scandal? Or did he think they might all get killed or go to jail? It did not make any sense. But it was kind of a sad scene when Guilliam gets home and says something (unintelligible to me) to his partner and then they both look sad.

The movie was more than 2 hours long, so I suppose the director did not have time to develop it; I feel it would have been better to leave it out than to leave us wondering "What the hell?"

I will just say that Cumberbatch's long blond bangs were very 70s! HE has gone through a lot of hairdos in his recent movie roles. ANything is better than the pathetic short hair he had in THE LAST ENEMY!

message 32: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Silvio111 wrote: "It is Bill Haydon who is portrayed as having had a relationship with Jim Prideau (back in university) in the books.

Now that would have been interesting! My friend did whisper to me, "Are they together, too?" in refering to Bill Haydon and Jim Prideau but it wasn't made explicit, I think.

Maybe there was a scene that was edited out of the final cut that made it more clear what was going on for Guillam? I had heard that (in the US, at least) gay people were thought of as a security risk (like they will be blackmailed or something) but... I think that was even earlier than the 70s. But anyway. I am leaning more towards it being a scandal and Guillam needing an absolutely "clean" background in case there was any questioning of his trustworthiness.

message 33: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments I think homosexuality was illegal in the UK until 1974. I remember reading BrianEpstein's memoir about managing the beatles and it was a big issue for him(he was gay.)

so maybe Smiley did not want any scandal to jeopardize his arrest of hayden.

I think Prideaux was heartbroken that hayden had left him far behind, although he did have the decency to get him back from Karla.

message 34: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments 1974? All I know is the Sexual Offences Act 1967 that decriminalized homosexual acts in private, but it didn't apply to the merchant navy or the armed forces (so sayth Wikipedia). Would that include Circus, somehow? I admit I don't know anything about the treatment of gay people in the UK during this time period.

message 35: by Silvio111 (new)

Silvio111 | 123 comments Joanna,
it was 1967. I don't know where I got 1974. (Wikipedia was down yesterday! : )
And I see that in the US, it was 2002 before all states had repealed sodomy laws.

Anyway, I do think that the actor who played Jim Prideaux in the recent movie did a really good job of looking miserable. And the thought of a person with his issues (his drinking, his violence, his anger; not so much his being gay) teaching in a boarding school kind of blows my mind. Wasn't it weird tha he lived in a trailer? Can you imagine an American boarding school letting their teacher live in a trailer parked in front of the school? Well, it was Britain in the 70s.

I like that apparently it is necessary for Benedict to wear a long coat with popped collars in any fannish thing he does. I hear a rumor that he might play the master for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2012. He better have a goatee. And a long coat with a popped collar. Badaaaaassssss.

I am just looking forward to the movie.

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Women Remember Deep Male Voices
"According to researchers from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and McMaster University in Canada, evolution has trained women to remember everything associated with men they find desirable, including anything that they ramble about when they open their sexy mouths. This means that if you happen to be a male with a deep Sean Connery Benedict Cumberbatch voice, which women tend to find very attractive, then your voice alone can actually enhance a woman's memory for absolutely anything you're saying, no matter how pointless it might be." http://www.cracked.com/article_19518_...
