Bonita Rose | 2 comments When sending a query letter to agent for a nonfiction work..
1 - do you include book proposal with outline and sample chapters and bio along with the query?
or do you just send one page query letter?

2- do you send to agents via regular mail or via fed ex/ups?? signature needed for delivery??

just wondering what is best??

thks! bonnierose

Riley (booksarecool) WE-ELL...
If I was sending a query letter, I'd give a summary and the first chapter/preface. Just so they'd know what it was about.

Check out Robert J. Sawyers website or Orson Scott Card. They both have stuff on writing a query letter (I think...I KNOW at least one of them does.)

well, that's non-fiction, i need like a fiction/fantasy book.

Riley (booksarecool) I've never written non-fiction. I've written stuff a little like Jodi Picoult's before, like miracles and stuff. I've also written sci-fi, and let me tell you that stuff is fun! You can make it as far-fetched as you want, but it still has a realistic element. I like writing fiction best. Anything's possible.

message 12: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ I like fantasy ... urban fantasy ... sci-fi ... you can get away with more. lol. ;D I think it takes pure genius to write a really good realistic fiction story; I don't think I could ever do it. XD

message 13: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) I know! It's so much harder writing about real life (unless it's from an utterly insane person's perspective) than writing fiction.

message 14: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) not nessicarally. I mean, I think it's just difficult to get ideas for those kinds of stories, simply because everyone finds their own life utterly dull, and they would have only their life to base it off of.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

*party time.* I'm so close to getting my story published. I just need to write the dang query letter. ugh!

message 16: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ need any help? query letters are hard ... and i've only written one. XD lol

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

summaries. . . i hate summaries.

message 18: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) well, it's hard for me. Unless I do it from an insane person's point of view. XD It's always interesting cause I usually base the character partly on me. XD

Laina (laineyru) Haha... speaking of insane people, you made me think of Edgar Allen Poe! Talk about pure genius... talk about insanity! I ♥ Edgar Allen Poe!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

lol,
We had to read one of his stories in english, and then write what may have happened after it.

message 21: by Laina (new)

Laina (laineyru) we just read The Pit and the Pendulum... for some reason, I love when stories are written with a narrorator who you can't rely on. Like the Tale Tell Heart... you never know what's real and what isn't. I think that's what makes Poe so scary.

message 22: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ definitely ... creeeepy

message 23: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) yeah, I love A Telltale Heart! He is literally insane though, no matter how much he denies it. I mean, no sane person could talk about murdering somebody calmly.

message 24: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) wow...probably makes for a great story. I'm gonna go find his stuff right now !

message 25: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) oh, it's great! you can download the audiobook on itunes, if you have it.

message 26: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) I'm not finding any of the poems that you guys are talking about! grrr.

message 27: by Laina (new)

Laina (laineyru) maybe because they are short stories.... haha.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Telltale Heart is the one we had to write a reply too. from the officer's pov.

message 29: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) ohhh...

message 30: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) I found it. Creepy. Even more creepy than my stories. And that's saying something. ohhh...

message 31: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I know. We read that story around halloween last year in language arts.
