Other than the book of the month. What are you reading right now?

Im reading Dorian Gray and I have to admit it feels like I should reread every sentence it is full of so much content. I'm not sure how long it will take me to finish it.

I loved the Picture of Dorian Gray. Did you see the movie?

Away - Amy Bloom -- really good

First Among Sequels. Its the 5th book in the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.
I read Dorian Gray a long time ago. I should re-read it.

I'm reading The Myth of You and Me and its fantastic! Laura sent it to me and I'm enthralled with it :)

I am reading Watership Down (yes, the rabbits). I think I'll start Atonement since I just finished Guernsey (and loved EVERY SECOND of it).

I'm reading The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. I loved The Lovely Bones. I also just finished reading Guernsey and really enjoyed it also!

I'm reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I am so hooked on this book, I already don't know what I'm going to do when I'm finished, and I'm not even halfway thru! (It's almost 800 pages.) I love the book AND the audio version has a terrific narrator. If you like Jane Austen, Dickens & magic, you would love it. So much great tongue-in-cheek humor - this author is one of a kind.

Wow, I'm really looking forward to Guernsey with all the great reviews!

Laura, I loved JS&MN also! It's really fun, huh?

OMG Emily! Just great all the way through!! However did you deal with the trauma of finishing it?

Reading Fablehaven. Came recommended so I told my brother about it. He bought it and loved it. I'm borrowing it right now. I like to mix it up a lot with the styles of books I read.

American Wife

Emily and Laura, how are you loving JS&MN I could not get into it at all and I love magic and all that stuff. I really thought that I would love that book but just could not get into it.
Anyway, I just started The story of Edgar Sawtelle and boy howdy is that a great book. Granted it has a couple of draggy pages but only pages not sections. It is overall, a super book.
I actually sprung for the hard back cuz I had a dandy coupon last weekend and had just got done with food poisoning and figured I deserved it. Agree?

Maureen, I loved the Life of Edgar Sawtelle. The subplot twists never end!

Brittany, how is American Wife? It is on my to read list.

I finished my book and now I'm on to The Five Love Languages. I have had two completely different people recommend this book to me in the last month and so when that happens I usually find that to mean someone is trying to tell me something.....so I'm reading it. :) Interesting premise so far.....

Gary Chapman believes we have five ways of expressing love and his book talks about each way and then how to incorporate that into your relationship.

Acts of Service, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch, Gifts

These are the ways we show our love for others and so far I've determined that my boyfriend really does love me----instead of saying all these sweet things he does things to help me out and he buys me things I need. I get it now!! ;)

Holli - That book helped me & my husband when we were having real trouble (he was oblivious - but I was very unhappy). It turns out we speak different love languages - mine is Words of Aff. & Touch, his is Acts of Svc and Time (could we BE more opposite?)

Anyway he is OCD clean, and I am the youngest of 9, so I've been cleaning since the age of 10. I hate to be lectured about cleaning. (I'm no pig, just don't feel the need to vacuum the floor every day.) I didn't know that was his love language, and so by cleaning on his schedule I was saying 'I love you'.

We still struggle with it, but that book was a real breakthrough for me. I recently gave it as part of a wedding gift. I think every couple should have it. He also wrote books for Teens, Friends, etc. My daughter's youth group once did a whole segment on LL for Teens. Good stuff.

Meg- i just started it last night. actually, only got through the prologue before i had to leave for an appointment. if it's any indication of the rest of the book, it'll be great. i hope i like it better than Prep.

Laura.....I think sometimes that this is the reason I fight with my boyfriend. I tend to start doubting his love for me because he's not showing it the way I do. He's not doing what I think a person should do to show their love and so I automatically think he's not in love with me anymore. I start saying that to him and he looks at me like I'm insane and says something dumb like "why would I be here if I weren't?" which makes me even more mad. Vicious cycle!

So....by reading this book I'm really hoping to be able to learn the ways he expresses his love so I can stop feeling like that and relax in my relationship. I'm excited to start it :)

I know already that I'm Words of Affirmation but have yet to learn what else I am or what he is yet.......

I read that book awhile ago, holli, and you are right, it DOES put things into an easy to understand world, doens't it?

I am currently reading " The Alphabet Sisters" and "The Time Traveller's Wife".

I am still on a waiting list at the library for the Knitting Club and the potato one. I will never be on track with the rest of you!

Maureen, JS&MN is a little hard to get into...at some points I remember finding it boring and difficult. It starts very slowly. But once it gets going it is wonderful.

Cyn, The Time Traveler's Wife is probably my favorite book EVER. I love it!

Maureen - out of curiosity, how much of JS & MN did you read before you gave up? And were you reading or audio-ing?

Brittany...I finished the book. :) I'd say he is Acts of Service, Physical Touch and I'm Quality Time and Words of Affirmation. This book is really eye-opening and I can't wait until he gets home so I can tell him all about it. Which he'll just love considering he's a Dead Sea and I'm a Babbling Brook. LOL I loved that part!!!

Well, y'all have sold me on Languages of Love - went on my wishlist!

I just started Guernsey lastnight and am loving it! I'm a bookclub vigin so it will be fun to have the chance to actually have people share their thoughts about a book I'm reading.

Tonight I will start Grace by Linn Ullmann. It's my "U" for A-Z author challenge and I'll be done! Woo!

I jumped ship before even starting Wednesday's Sisters and began The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It's fantastic.

Of course, I can't wait to read Wednesday's Sisters, so I'll have to stay away from your comments to avoid any spoilers. :)

I'll be interested in hearing what you think of The Almost Moon. I thought it was the weakest of her 3 books. Bones is great--but I think her best book is her memoir about her brutal rape, Lucky.

I didn't like Almost Moon at all. I loved the Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Did you notice Oprah picked it for her book this time?

I agree Kate....I thought Lucky was the best one!! Lovely Bones was good but I struggled with it at time. It didn't completely hold my interest every second but I still liked it. I have not read The Almost Moon yet.

I just started On Chesil Beach a few days ago. So far, so good. I've had it on my shelf for months and just never got around to reading it. It seems like it'll be a quick read.

Chesil Beach was great. Very erotic at times don't you think?

Meg- I'm now 20-25% through, and it's pretty good. However, I could do without the sex scences- very similar to those in Prep.

Should I read Prep?

I am reading a book by David Sedaris. I just finished "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and it was funny, so I thought I would give another one a try.

I am also reading a Ruby Payne book for a class that I am taking. Two totally different books, but interesting.

I like to read a variety of books.

I recently started I Capture the Castle. It was written by the 101 Dalmations author, in 1948.

I'm trying it out for my niece and if I think she'll like it, I'll send it to her in her next care package. (She's a freshman, away at college.) She only likes clean fiction, and I wanted something teen-angsty about love. We'll see. Anybody read it?

I just started East of Eden by John Steinbeck. So far so good :)

I really didn't care for Prep. My favorite thing about it was the cover. ;)

That does say much for Prep! I guess I won't put it on my to be read list.

Dolly, Ruby Payne did an inservice in my district. What do you think of her?

AHHH Tish that is my FAVORITE book!!! I just read it this year and so wish I had read it before. Hands down the best book I've read this year (although I am in love with next months book almost as much)

I'm new to this group, but wanted to respond to Dolly and Meg about Ruby Payne. I've seen both her and one of her facilitators in the last year at two separate inservices. Her research is fascinating! I deal with incarcerated teens, and the culture of poverty is so present with many of them. Let me know what you think...

Gee Holli about that Five Languages of Love I think I might need to read that. I have problems with relationships because it seems I become a doormat and doing all the "work". Of course I also have a bad habit of choosing bad boys to fate as well!

Now for my many reads my main 2 are the following...I got started reading an Anothny Trollope book (Barchester Towers) with my British Classic group and LOVED it so I been working on that series of his English Churchmen in Barchester, UK....I am now on the 4th one...Framley Parsonage. Oh and the other one I have actually started is one on OSS officiers & Spies from WWII for the US, I just love history!Other than that I checked out a slew of books since I am about to start my vacation in less than a week. SO I am sure I will be reading like a mad woman!!

It was a great book Leslie...I learned alot from it :) I also used to have your same thing going on with guys until I read Codependency and You and THAT book was remarkable in changing my world around.

Hmmm... The Five Languages of Love. Perhaps I should check into that. I am trying to deal with some issues in my marriage.

At the present I am reading The Shop on Blossom Street.

The Five Love Languages is a book I would recommend for anyone. There are so many things in there that I learned. I also went to a parenting workshop and found that there is also a Five Love Languages of Children. In reading that, I have learned so much about myself and my son.

I'm currently reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien for my issues in contemporary lit class.

Debbie - You should try the 5 Love Languages. Esp. if you are religious, it doesn't smack of religion, but there's a fair amount of scripture in there. I'd be surprised if you didn't take away something of value from it.

I just dove into Lucky and am very captivated by her writing. WOW! I just saw The Almost Moon and will be picking that up this week once I finish this one.
