I was just wondering what kind of pets y'all have. I have two Miniature Dachshunds and a Great Dane. Yeah, tiny and huge. The little ones (Maggie and Sherman) were our apartment dogs, and then my husband couldn't hold out and longer once we moved to a house: he had to get his Great Dane (Cosmo). He is a rescue; some people on a farm south of Austin found him wandering the highway, skeletal and limping. After a few months, they couldn't handle the cost anymore, and Doug found him on CraigsList. He's really very sweet, especially when you are sitting down at the computer and he comes and puts his head on your lap. (Or over your arms so you can't type...)

My husband and I have 60 some-odd homing pigeons that we race. As far as pets go, they're not exactly warm and snuggly, and since my husband travels a heck of a lot, I've been seriously considering getting a dog to keep me company. We used to have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Buddy, that I used to take for long walks by the lake. Great times...seeing so much wildlife, the early morning air. Ahhh.
I wonder what kind of dog I'll get. Any suggestions for a non-shedding dog that doesn't need a lot of exercise?
Emily, have you seen The Ugly Dachshund? God I loved that movie when I was a kid!!!!!!!Non-shedding & not a lot of exercise? Hmmm...
Maltese? Yorkie? Sheltie (though shelties are bigger than the other two...) Look at http://www.petfinder.org You can do a good deed AND find the dog you need!
As for me, I have 4 cats between my roommate and me. Mine are Zack and Copley. Copley is named after Isabelle Copley in Memory and Dream by Charles de Lint. :)
Zack is just named Zack because I liked the name.
I used to be a dog person before I got Zack. Now I'm totally in love with my cats! TOTALLY! I just think they're the quirkiest and best pets ever. And I never have to walk them. It rocks!
Great thread topic!
lol... i don't know of any dogs that don't shed! i have had atleast 15 different breeds growing up, and we always found hairs. :) i have a pit bull and a black lab now. next will be another cocker spaniel.
I have a dust mop. Or some might call her a shihtzu. Bacia = Kiss in Italian. Anniversary present. Husband speaks Italian I'm part Italian when we were dating he would always say "Bacia Me". She has an underbite and Emily can testify that she needs to have her hair trimmed. Her feet look like Chewbacca at the moment.
We used to have cats until one by one they had tragic endings and my backyard begin to remind me of pet cemetary and I thought I was cursed.

My dog isnt a big shedder, part of the reason we got her. The other part being my number one pet rule never own an animal who has poop bigger than your own. Trust me it's a sound rule to live by!
I have a friend though who is totally allergic to dander or dog or whatever. They forked out bank and got some hypo allergenic dog. CUTE as the day is long. I cant remember the bred but cute thing.

Dust mop. :) I love this topic.I have two rescue dogs: a Pomeranian mix named Max (he's so energized he can take 10-mile walks, no exaggeration) and a Border Collie mix named Rozzi who's a pillow of love.
Speaking of dogs and books, I recommend: DOG YEARS by Mark Doty.
The dogs for allergic people are huge right now, and there are many breeds being mixed with poodles, either standard or minis (not toys). There's the Labradoodles, the Goldendoodles, the Cockerpoo, and lately I've seen others as well. The Doodles were the Latest Greatest Designer Dogs (aka mutts!) of a few years ago, and they are expensive! I like the Goldendoodles alittle better than the labs, they have a more even, sweeter temperament, I've met some seriously hyper wacked out labradoodles.Wheaton terriers are a medium sized dog and I love them, very cool dog! They are very spunky but don't have that insane Terror personality, really playful and sweet. Schnauzers are also hypo-allergenic I believe. And of course poodles, who are actually extremely athletic and doggy, not frou frou at all!
The difference is in the fur vs. hair. The hypo-allergenics have hair, and don't shed.
Hey can you tell? I love dogs! Haha, I've got a German Shepherd, oh, he is my best friend, so smart, so dear, so loyal, so sweet, super friendly.

I also have 3 kitties, 2 that are 1 year old now rescued from a feral mom, brother and sister. The male is right now sitting on my lap busy snuggling in my armpit. He's nuts. You look at him and you see Trouble! His sister is sugar and spice and everything nice. And I have one older one I took in from someone who couldn't keep her anymore. She hates everyone except me. Perpetual scowl.

I am such a cat person. I have two rescued cates, Max and Missy. One is an orange tabby who is madly in love with me. He just sits and stares at me. My boyfriend is totally jealous of this cat and at times can't even be in the same room with him. Missy, my tuxedo cat, is too adorable for words. She is more his cat but only because Max tries to keep her away from me (he can't share).I have a grandson that is a labradoodle, it is adorable whose name is Briggs. Also, a granddaughter named Priscilla who is a yorkshire terrier.
I have one cat, Phoebe. She's almost 2 years old. She's named after the "Friends" character. I've been threatening to get another (boy) and name it Chandler. She keeps me busy - I didn't realize 3 days ago when I was getting ready for work that she was in the shower while I was doing my hair, finished, closed the door and locked her in my tiny bathroom all day - I'm such a bad kitty mommy! I get home and I call her (she's typically by the front door waiting for me when I get home), she doesn't come. I look in her favorite hiding spot (under my bed) and she's not there. Then I hear this pathetic "meow" coming from the bathroom. I'm like, wait, how did I manage to miss that this morning. OPPS! She didn't seem too upset by it. I'm glad it wasn't one of my gym days and I come home right after work.
I have 2 Jack Russells, Jake & Jazzy, who I call my "kids" when anyone asks me if I have children. Jake is 8 and we've had him through all of our moves across the country. Jazzy is 2 and we found her here in TN. I had a Jack Russell growing up named Jack who has since passed away and so I grew fond of JR's at a young age. I love cats too, but they would never survive around Jake! He sees them as a furry chew toy.Kate, thanks for the Dog Years recommendation. :) I'm adding it to my "to-read" list.
My aunt breeds dogs and one of her breeds sells out quickly for the cuteness factor but also because they don't shed......those are Malteses. I have one cat that I have had for her entire 16 year long life. Her mom was my cat (mean little Himalayan) and when my cat was born I kept her and gave her mom and brother to a no kill shelter. Her name is Kitty (she would never let me call her anything else) and she's a tall, gray, long haired tabby/Himalayan with huge grees eyes. I love her and she definitely has QUITE the personality! After 16 years of being together she's like a child to me and when she's gone I won't ever have another......
KSR - My long-haired dachshund doesn't shed, and he is also really laid back. I've heard this is typical of the long-haired ones.I LOVE "The Ugly Dachshund." I watched that movie over and over again when I was little because my family had dachshunds.
RE: poodles!I grew up with standard poodles and they really are fantastic dogs. Not frou frou, as Lori put it. And SMART! Absolutely fantastic dogs, for sure.
I have 2 cats that found me! One is Pepsi and she is our golden child. Never meows and isn't demanding-- travels well in the car when we move cross-country by sitting on the dashboard. She does not wrong in my book! Then we have Shasta and she found us since moving her to Texas 15 months ago. She is quite demanding, meows all the time and drives me crazy. I tried to give her away at one point, but now I can't because she and Pepsi are friends now and I think they would miss one another.Holly, I am dying for a Maltese!!! I want one so bad but I keep holding off because i know a dog is big responsibility and I don't know if I am responsible enough yet. A couple of years back we took in a sick Yorkie from some people who couldn't care for him anymore and when he finally died, it was truely heartbreaking. You almost need to have a doggie savings account for vet bills because it can add pretty quickly!
Paige...the Malteses are so cute....my aunt has 12 of them that run around her house and yard all the time. They love it :) The mini Malteses are even cuter....she has one named Tess that's adorable. Her oldest one (JoJo) is about 15 now and just started getting sick and having problems.
Lori, how did you post those pics?! I've got a gaggle of kitties! We can't wait until we move where we can have a dog or 2!
Jo you can post any picture that is housed online--although I can't figure out how to post my flickr pictures. Just copy the web link and insert it into this code:Just take out the spaces in between the "s but use a space instead of an underscore in between img and src. Click (some html is ok) link at the bottom of the post a comment section and follow the instructions if my post doesn't make sense to you.
Amanda beat me to the instructions, and explained it so much better too!Her poodles trained her well. :)
Sorry for being a buttinsky. I got nervous when TWO WHOLE HOURS had gone by without anyone answering Jo's question. I panicked!:)
They don't bother my curtains - but they do think they own everything in the house including me! Right now they are both curled up beside me on the couch.
Pets!! Currently I have a blue parakeet named Stanley but she should really be Stella. She is about 7.
In the past I had a Golden/Collie/Australian Sheepdog mix named Jasper (after the dog in Rebecca) that I loved deeply. He died of old age.
My kids grew up with that dog and many cats named variously Rolly, Polly,Zolly etc. All black and white.
The kids dad has a dog named Gonzo which is yello lab mix that he taught to say "I love You". No I'm not kidding.
I used to have a maltese cross named Poppycorn. I also loved that little angel deeply. That is a sad story too sad.
A dog right now would be great, but being home and awake for 2 hours a day is not fair to a pup. So Stanley and I keep each other happy.
Love this thread! We share our house with one 15 year old tabby (Tigger) and 3 basset hounds. The oldest one (Millie Mae) is a rescue and about 14, she's really slowing down and we don't expect her to be with us too much longer, she weighs about 40 pounds. The next one is Flip, he's from a local breeder and is 5. He's the golden child, is a big baby and totally neurotic. The baby is Gryffin (as in house of Gryffindor). He's 3 and more neurotic than Flip~they are 1/2 brothers. Gryffin is mentally and physically challenged and has horrible grass allergies but we love him anyway. Both boys weigh about 75 pounds.Between the cat and 3 bassests we're covered in animal hair at all times. The dust bunnies are bigger than a small child and that's after we sweep twice a day! It got so overwhelming that my husband decided to shave them and it's made a HUGE difference in our lives. Now we only have to sweep once a day.
They're a handful but I wouldn't trade them for anything!
I have Boston Terrier who is a spaz. and 3 rescue kitties. They hated the new black and white rat thing when we brought it home.. now they live in an uneasy peace. If you're looking for a dog.. I would recommend a retired greyhound. No smell and they don't shed. They don't need a lot exercise. I think after racing for the first part of their lives they want to rest! I would get one if we could afford another animal but right now, alas, it is not in the numbers.
Ah yes, that's a wonderful thing. I've seen many retired Greyhounds, and they are wonderful companions. Did you know that they are considered livestock? So the racers get away with treating them worse than dogs.
jackie- we had a retired greyhound very breifly, when i was about 12. he was a very nervous, jittery thing, and when he started biting my siblings who were smaller than him, he was sent to another home.
I know someone here who runs a greyhound rescue group here.. Whether they can adapt to kids and/or other animals in the house is just an issue of each individual dog's temperament. I'm looking forward to getting one in the future but I'll take Junebug (our Boston) when we pick one up just to make sure they can get along.
I have a 6 month old kitten named Maggie and a 14 yeard cat named Coke. Maggie is the devil in a fur coat. Coke is old and grumpy. What a pair they make though.
I love hearing about all your pets. Animals are very much a part of our family's life. We have three dogs and two cats. All our animals are rescues. Our dogs were all on death row at the animal shelters before being picked up by rescue groups. Three of our pets started out as fosters but we ended up adopting them in the end. We have a Pomeranian, that's right she almost got euthanized because she was so scared at the shelter. We also have a Shepherd/Border Collie mix and a Spaniel mix mutt. Our first cat was a feral who was trapped at 6 weeks with her siblings. They came to live with us and the siblings got adopted but Maggie just never warmed up so she stayed with us. And our other cat V was found on the street and came to us from anther family when he couldn't get along with their cats. Adopting animals is a great thing to do. There are many great pets at the shelter and you'll often find pure breeds. I would urge anyone looking for a new pet to save a life as there are many euthanized every year. And as mentioned in a previous comment, Petfinder.com is a great place to look.
Hi! Love reading about all of the pets here. Pets add so much to one's life, - I can't imagine my home without 1 (or 2 or 3 or 4) I've had pets for as long as I can remember - Cats, dogs, a bird or two, fish, (although are they classified as pets? I don't think so!) We even had a rat as a pet. He was part of a 6th grade science experiment that my daughter's class had. His name was Nike. I told her NO WAY when she asked if she could adopt him. So guess who ended up with him? BUT - believe it or not, he was such a cool little critter! But at the present, I have 3 cats - Buttons, female gray and white long-haired (I think she's a little neurotic!) Tommy, a BIG tabby male and Snickers, a tortoiseshell female. We also have a smooth coated border collie named Belle. She's the BEST DOG EVER!
Debbie
WE have:a goldendoodle named Snickerdoodle
a labradoodle named Mocha ( my pic)
2 cats named Cinnamon and Cocoa
Debbie~my first cat was named Buttons-he was a grey and white short hair. My dad said he ran away but I'm not so sure that's the full story...too coincidental with my little brother's cat allergy diagnosis *grrr* I was soo traumatized!
Laura....I thought the same thing about ALL of Cyn's animals....put 'em all together (dogs and cats) and you could make something LOL ;)
LOL..isn't it funny? even the dog's names are food! IT wasn't even planned...I guess I really am a foodie at heart, huh?
MMmmmmmmmmmmmm snickerdoodles...it's been awhile since I've made those :)Yeah, the combination of her cats & dogs would def. send me to the kitchen - never to return again! :)
Hee hee hee! Makes me think that if I want to start eating healthy, I should name my pets Avocado and Green Bean.
I love the names people come up with for their pets :-)Now, I want to tell you about my cat, Tommy. One day 2 or 3 years ago, I brought home a tomato (it was in a small brown paper bag)and just put it in my cupboard, shut the door and left to go back to work or somewhere. Later on when I arrived home and walked into the kitchen, there was : the cupboard door open, the sack on the floor and a half-eaten tomato on the floor in front of the stove! Since then, if I even carry a tomato in to the house, he smells it right away and starts crying for it. So I always give him a little bit. He loves em!!
Debbie
Crazy!!! That's really funny Debbie.....anyone else have animals with weird food obsessions? My cat loves cheese. Cheez-its, Cheetos, nacho cheese from Taco Bell, mac and cheese... etc.
2 of my girl kitties LOVE chocolate ensure vitamin drinks! (They'd bug the crap out of me every time I'd drink one so I'd fill the cap for them & let them go to town!) One of them also loves baby food, any flavor yogurt (she follows me around chirping at me while I eat it until she gets some), pasta sauce, and mint chocolate chip ice cream!

When my dogs hear me getting ice from the icemaker, they immediately race into the kitchen....it sounds like a mini herd of buffalo running through our house...lol. Our oldest, Jake, will also snatch ice cubes out of our cooler when we're filling it up. I guess it's a healthy treat! :) They go crazy over green beans too.
