In chapters 1-4 it is mainly introducing the family: Adelinde Yen Mah is hte unwanted child, big sister (who hates adeline and has no respect for her, also thinks she is the boss and the best), big brother ( who is always playing tricks on her and ganging up on her with er other brothers), second brother , third brother, fourth brother ( who is clearly the fovourite child of them all, he is always getting better clothes, food and love), little sister (also a favourite), father ( is a hard working man who supports his family but still has no intresst in Adelines well being and basically ignores her) , Nai Nia ( her grandmother who loves and cares for Adeline as much as the others) , Ye Ye ( Also loves and cares for his grandcildren and treats the equally unlike the parents and siblings), Aunt baba ( She is someone who cares for Adeline and loves her , she acts as her mother that she never had) and Niang (She is lke the evil stepmother who whips adeline and hates her more then anything). The only one who like Adeline is Aunt baba, Nai Nai and Ye Ye, the others dont like her because when Adeline was born her mother died from giving birth so the rest of her family see her a bad luck and treat her very badly. Aunt Baba was the only one to see Adelines intellegegnce, kindness and sadness. Adeline is a very smart child and is always top of her class. When adeline's grandmother dies from a sudden stroke every one is soo sad especially Ye Ye and Aunt baba. When Adeline comes home wearig a silver medal week after week Niang and heer brothers and sisters get really jelous

this book is so sad

Really sad to think that there are some people in the world living like this. It is kinda sad too that poor Adeline has to live with horrible Niang(mother) even though she is her stepmother not her real mother.I still found the book very gripping cause u are worrying bout her all the time. This was a true story you hafe to keep this in mind. The second and third books were good but fictional.
