I just began chapter 2 & the pacing and story arrangement pulls you in right away.
Side note: I mentioned on twitter that I'm currently reading this book and the author, Ben Mezrich reached out & I told him we are reading this & asked if we could do a Q&A with him sometime & he said sure! So we shall see if we can make this happen. so read up, get your questions ready & lets see if we can get him to chat with us for a bit :)

This is awesome! I'm way behind on my reading (haven't been feeling all that great) but I will try to catch up.
chapter 8 complete...
This is crazy! It's so clear that his narrow upbringing gave him a false sense of the world around him as well as making him hungry for attention. Curious how it will playout with his wife, girlfriend and his penchent for taking things that aren't his - fossils and what not.

Im on chapter 14... Freaking great story this guy is so gutsy!! Always walking on the edge and your right Sam... It was his conservative upbringing. Kept too much in a bubble and now that he is set free... Holy crap watch out. That's so exciting!!! Set it up!! Maybe end of the month??
As for the possible Q&A I'm not sure how to do it online or maybe we could have a conference call, that is if he signs off on it. Thoughts?
still in chapter 19...
Hold up! I don't see That as innocent or naive to the world anymore. I thought he was foolishly doing this to impress a girl but in actuality it's the thrill & the money that is fueling him. And I can't believe he was that stupid to 1. trust a stranger to find someone for him 2. post stuff on the internet & blindly email people.
PS - I'm a bit tipsy as I write this so I'm sure in the morningthis wont' make a lick of sense. :)
I see now this is loosely based on a true story cause how could the author know what the Belgium dude was up to?
Now that I see Thad as a bit of a greed my view on him has changed the way I look at the story as a whole.
Side note I think his wife is stepping out on him. I'm just saying... they both are leading such separate lives how could they not? But then again what do I know, I'm not married nor have been.

Chapter 21 complete...
Ok so Helm gets a bonus tour cause of his connections. My view on Thad has changed totally. I want to believe that this is just a mental game for him but it's clear that he can't be that naive. How did he afford to learn to scuba dive, fly a plane, and do a bunch of other things while his wife is a struggling model. Not to mention that their marriage s tanking and neither seems to care.
I'm on the fence about how I feel about Axel. They are portraying it as though this goody-two-shoes but I don't think he did the right thing. had he left it all alone I don think Thad would have followed through but I'm only at chapter 22 so we shall see

Chapter 24 complete...
Thad is really about having experiences. I can relate to that. When you are looking to make life full it all comes down to pushing yourself to have something that is just yours, that is there for you to learn from, something that can't be taken from you. His up-bring has done a number on him where he is constantly seeking out "something" and in the process he pushes closer and closer to the line and not he's there & about to cross it. But regardless I dont get how he doesn't think this is a bad idea that will get him into serios trouble?

Chapter 27 complete...Thad gets on my damn nerves! He has this awesome opportunity at NASA and even though I don't like that he has a girlfriend while married (they shoulda divorced ages ago!), he has all this stuff going for him.. why mess it up?! He sees how ridiculous this is by taking the "heist" truck... just stop! Doesn't he doubt for one second that Axel could sell him out??

Do you think he's naive or arrogant? that's what I"m having trouble deciding

Because of his background I'm leaning more towards naive, but there is some definite signs of arrogance, especially since everything he has ever tried he has succeeded in. He even says that himself. So, I'd say its a bit of both!
chapter 31 complete...
How selfish! Gibson spends 30 years of his life working hard just to have these 3 young foolish a-holes take it from him. That truly is what upset me especially during and after the heist. Thad keeps acting like this is some college prank, um hello buddy this isn't college it's NASA and to think if you get caught you will get bailed out that easy shows how disconnect from reality he is.

Chapter 42 complete... REALLY?!?! Thad is a complete idiot. He makes me so mad. He is so book smart, but has no street smarts whatsoever. He deserves being in jail for 8 years. In Spanish I'd say... QUE PENDEJO! lol. He threw everything away for something so selfish and foolish. I feel for Gibson... the man worked so hard his whole life only to have this punk steal it and then loose the freaking notebooks! UGH!
Chapter 38 complete...
He's a dumbass! There is no other way to say it. How how HOW do you through it all away for nothing! Then have the balls to call your wife, who you've cheated on & ignored for months, to basically bail him out. Selfish simply selfish.

Book done... Incredible story. This guy was a work of art. He was 2 parts arrogant and 1 part naive. He threw away an amazing opportunity for a girl that at the end of the day was not there for him. He betrayed his wife and one of his personal heroes. All for what? At the end of the day this will make for a great movie... and you hope that all those years in prison taught him a thing or two.
I forget to write or read the comments as I go along through the book. It's funny to see all the comments about the book and character. The guy reminded me of a young, immature kid who lacked life experience. Yes, he may have been smart with books...but not life. I mean who gets a pothead as their sidekick in illegal activity? I see kids like this who are gifted in school, but lack common sense. Or they are always trying to chase something that gives them excitement since they become bored with learning.
I've read everything from this author and really enjoy the way he writes. Also all of his books have been turned into movies (21 and The Social Network).I have to be blunt and just say it: I still want to slap Thad. Hard. On the face and leave a mark. Ugh. I know alot of engineers like him; smart yet so stupid at the same time- pathetic even. I have a harder time liking Thad than some of the other protagonists from Mezrich's novels, but he's still an interesting person.
I do love the story though about living outside your box and the consequences. I found Thad to be more arrogant and reckless than naive. The writer did leave some of the case facts out but I could see where that would slow down the story. The novel seems to be written to easily convert into a screenplay. I heard Sony is making this into a movie! Exciting!
