OK, it's time to open the nominations for the August 2011 Fantasy Theme - Superheroes .... Once we have 5ish nominations, I'll open up the poll to vote to see what we're going to read starting August 15th.

Nominations
Gladiator by Philip Wylie
Boltman by Eric Quinn Knowles
Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman
Mardock Scramble by Tow Ubukata
The Power Within: An iHero Omnibus by Frank Fradella

Matthew Bennardo | 1 comments Gladiator, by Philip Wylie

Very interesting book, often considered one of the possible inspirations for Superman. I'm not sure how available it is, however.

Gladiator by Philip Wylie is available in the US but I'm not sure about overseas ... I didn't see it in the Amazon UK store ... but it's a pretty great choice.

I've been debating between two different books - one I've read and on one I haven't .... so I'm going to go with the one I haven't read but I've already put on my short list .... Boltman by Eric Quinn Knowles

I would like to nominate Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman.

Tom Meade You can download Gladiator here (http://www.archive.org/details/Gladia...). It sounds like an interesting book, so I second the nomination.

Hello, by the way.

Valerie Long (valeriejlong) | 17 comments I humbly refrain from proposing mine, although I have to think hard to come up with a superhero. Kenneth Bulmer's Nova Man might qualify, or even the Million Dollar Man?

No. Rune Balot would be one fine superhero:

Mardock Scramble

Even if this one doesn't make it into the poll, it's worth reading.

Elie Harriett Gladiator is one of the prototypes for Superman. Great story. Soon I will be invincible is one of my all time favorites. Austin Grossman says his next book will be out in 2012. I can't wait. If we do the Grossman book, I highly recommend the audiobook version. The readings are broken up by a male and a female narrator. Very good readings by both.

If I could add one, I recommend The Power Within: An iHero Omnibus by Frank Fradella. It is a series of superhero short stories by an independent publisher that is creating a new superhero universe. The stories are very well written. I usually can't stand short stories, but these all rang really well with me.

It's one of my favorites and very few people have read it.

Elie Harriett I was looking to see this morning if there are more superhero books that I know of and enjoy available in ebook format. Strangely, there are not. Last Days of Krypton and Enemies & Allies, both by Kevin Anderson are, and of course, someone already mentioned my favorite book, Soon I will be Invincible, but overall, many of my favorite superhero books are out of print.

I am getting more interested in superhero prose lately, which is why I recommended The Power Within, it is by a small publisher (no, I have no affiliation with them, I just enjoy the books). I really am glad to find people taking the genre seriously enough they are experimenting with new ways of telling superhero stories.
