Should JD Salinger's classic work be made into a film? CAN it properly, respectfully, and accurately be translated from the page onto the silver screen?

If so, who should be cast as Holden Caulfield? Who should be entrusted with directing it?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Cherylann | 1 comments I think that so much of what makes Catcher in the Rye such a masterpiece is the writing of Holden's narration. I don't think the plot itself is necessarily what makes it a great book. I don't think that it could be translated from the page, at least not in a way that would do justice to the novel.

No. It isn't the story of Holden that Salinger wanted to preserve in my opinion, but the story within the story of WW2. WW2 was a popular war and he couldn't write what he witnessed without suffering condemnation. Surely he witnessed things that were very painful, and he had a soul. This is why we feel that Holden has a soul. But it really is the book that has the soul and we need to look deeper into it. How many times have people seen a movie and thought they knew the book. Two examples here: Bambi A Life In the Woods by Felix Salten and The 39 Steps, because Salinger mentions that one in The Catcher in the Rye. You must read the book come to the point that you say I don't understand what he is trying to say and dig deeper. You can't do that in a predigested movie.

Sarah | 1 comments I don't think that there will ever be any director, actor, or screenplay that will be capable of capturing the depth of story and character that live and breathe in the book. I think for most people reading this book is such a personal experience. Making a movie of Catcher in the Rye would create a needless gap between Salinger and the reader. A movie could never possess the purity of Salinger's creation, and would only be a hodgepodge of various translations/visions by movie makers.
