well... it's winding on down to the end of the month, did anyone get around to reading this? if so, did you make it all the way through?i started this one interested to get a different take on UF - in some of my other groups there's been a lot of discussion about people of color as main characters rather than as villains or sidekicks. unfortunately, this came off as a bad buffy clone (she's apparently the chosen one slayer, she has an older "watcher" to guide her, she's got a scooby gang all ready to go) with a lot of nothing much happening. i couldn't force myself much past page 40 or so, thanked my lucky starts i'd gotten this one as a freebie, and gave up on it.
so, anyone out there completely love this one? does it get better later, or are the first handful of chapters a pretty accurate sip of what the whole drink tastes like?
I read this a while ago and continued the series. It does get better the more you read. Idk I just liked how it wasn't the same as the other vampire hunter books I was reading. As a spoiler she is in love with the guy she eventually has to hunt. So throughout the books I am wondering when will they be caught or if he will turn on her, and turn her.
I think I set this aside too the first time. But I went back to it and finished it.
I too quit relatively early, but saw this BOM and thought I'd try again (sometimes I'm just not in the mood, ya know?). I finished it and gave it 4 stars (barely, I'll admit) because it did achieve what I believe the author intended. That said, I thought Damalie (sp?)was kinda "white bread" - please don't take that offensively! but I don't know how else to describe her - once her color was described and then only in a few sections was it even in my mind. Her bandmates were an enjoyable variety of cultures and personalities tho. And there were word choices and slang BDB.Other than the love interest's "problem", there really wasn't anything else unique I felt. Just a decent story. I'll admit to giving Ms. Banks an extra star because she is so sick right now. I love her other series,
.
Its OK to comment on the race of the main character since she is ethnic. I know its difficult for me as an author to want to write characters with specific racial features and have to identify culturally as well. Depending on her (the author's) upbringing it could just be her preference to make her characters 'that way', no matter the ethnic background. I am glad that I can read all types of characters in one book and each one for the uniqueness they bring to the role, because they are a joy to read.
And Ms. Banks sure did that in Minion. I do plan to continue this series - she's a good writer and I need all the new PNR series I can get! Keep up your writing, Kenji! We need more good authors!

I should add this series to the series folder we have. Feel to to discuss it there as you read it. I have a few of them myself and have read book 1and 2.

1. What do you like about this specific paranormal theme? Was is portrayed well by this author?
2. What was different about the characters? World? Setting? That made the story unique.
3. If this is book 1 are you planning on continuing the series?
4. If this is your first time reading this author. What did you like or dislike about their writing style.
5. How does this book compare to other PNR books you have read recently, with a similar theme?
6.Does realism play a part in reading a paranormal book? If the character is a fictional being does it help if the history seems accurate. All myths have a birth in fact.
7.In the end what was the best part?
