Oi, Mate - throw some shrimp on the barbie while you're at it! (is that how it is spelled? "barbie"? Goddess knows I wouldn't want to be called an atrocious speller ...)

Dale Ibitz (goodreadscomdale_ibitz) Hey Splitter, when I was in 5th grade we almost moved to Australia! My mother put her foot down though and refused...we ended up in Washington state instead. But I've always wondered, "What if?"

C.S. Splitter | 9 comments Australia is one of those places I wan to go. The only problem is that they have a lots of creepy crawlies...like snakes and snakes make me jump and sceam like a little girl lol.

I think that anyone who can speak with an Australian accent should read a passage from this book and post it for us on YouTube...or maybe on a blog....I think Phil would LOVE it!! LOL

message 14: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 23 comments If anyone wants to put anything in an Australian accent on my blog, PLEASE!!!! LOL

message 15: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) *sigh* We have a trick modem that periodically drops us off the server. It decided to do that whilst I was trying to open the post to get Imperial Hostage. The password only gives one chance - I can't get back in and haven't been able to download the book :-( Help!!

message 16: by Anagha Uppal (new)

Anagha Uppal | 20 comments Katy, I know how you feel. We recently changed to Comcast, and now I spend half my time trying to connect. Aargh!

Lisa James (sthwnd) I'm not worried about my email being private. With a little sleuthing, if someone wants it, they can get it anyway. So here's mine: sthwnd@comcast.net

I used to have a pretty decent Aussie accent, based upon Paul Hogan's. Dunno how good it is anymore - I tend to slip into cockney nowadays ... Anyway, can't really figure out how to record my voice anyway ...

message 25: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 23 comments I can do a southern accent! :-P

message 26: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyas-69) Cassie wrote: "I can do a southern accent! :-P"

Oh, I used to have a whole range of them - southern, Minnesotan, British, Australian, Speedy Gonzales - they've all sort of ... merged now. I can sound really weird and no one can figure out from where I came ... I like to do that to people who come to my door trying to sell stuff ... confuses them. LOL I can even do a sort of Irish accent, but Scots is beyond me, except for a word or two ... I figured when I moved here to Georgia I'd be picking up an accent right away, but the Georgia accent is a weird one and I just can't do it, even if I try.

message 27: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 23 comments I live in Alabama, so southern is my accent...LOL...

Katy (katyas-69) Cassie wrote: "I live in Alabama, so southern is my accent...LOL..."

Howdy, neighbor. Anyway, I grew up in Montana and it is part of the whole "we ain't go no dad-blamed accent" mid-western area, the type of lack of accent that everyone in the media tries to emulate. Ho-hum - so boring!

message 29: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 23 comments Some of my family has that accent, but it drives me insane that the media always exaggerates it so much!!!

message 30: by Dale (new)

Dale Ibitz (goodreadscomdale_ibitz) I'm with Katy...my aussie accent always goes cockney!

message 31: by Mysti (new)

You got the barbie right, but in this country they're prawns. "Shrimps" was done by Hogan because he didn't believe Yanks (to an Aussie, all Americans are Yanks, even Southerners) would understand what prawns are.

We know what prawns are - over here the word "prawn" is used to describe the largest-sized shrimp. And a lot of the work calls us Yanks - I think it started way back when we revolted against the Brits - first it was "bloody colonials" and then "Yanks" Heh.

Katy (katyas-69) I still can't download it! :-( I get into a recursive loop where I keep being sent back to the password page.

Sorry, Katy. Don't know where the Poms got it from, but as far as I know, in Oz it comes from that old song, "I'm a Yankee-Doodle Dandy..."

Thanks for clearing up any misunderstandings about the difference between prawns and shrimps. We wouldn't barbecue the little ones either -- don't know what Hoges was thinking about!

All those different accents are amazing. We don't seem to have that here, though Adelaide people talk a bit funny -- they sound a bit like Kiwis (i.e. New Zealanders)

"Youse" is so yesterday. "Mate" (in a non-sexual sense) is acceptable.
