Hi!Always happy to join any group involving Michael's books. Big fan of Riyria here :) and am looking forward to more!
Kim
hey all call me vollmir super excited for the four new riyria books in the comming months happy to join the group of such an amazing author
Aloha, my name is Mystika, and even though i just found out about Riyria(as in, you know, a week and a half ago) i already love it! Sadly, i had to work when i got the first so it took me four days to finish Theft of Swords. But lucky me, i started Rise of Empire last night and plan on finishing it tonight. I also have Heir of Novron on my table just waiting to be read. And of course im excited for the Crown tower! Im definitely seeing some skirmishes between Royce and Hadrian In that. Thank you so much for writing these books!
Hi, I love Riyara stuff! With the over done Paranormal//dark fantasy field- it seems the epic field has been spiraling down the tube. I was happy to stumble upon these at my local store. Brings back the Eddings, Feist, Weiss & Hickman days! Royce Rocks & Hadrian is a duelist supreme !
The first 10 pages excited me enough to order 3/4 and preorder 5/6. I am a 61 year old disabled homebound vet and have approximately 4500 books. My hobbies are books, miniseries and 1960s rock and 1980s new wave. My favorite song is "Forever Autumn" by the Moody Blues lead singer Justin Heyward (sp?), favorite 80s song is Gang of 4s paralyzed, and favorite rockers are Eric Clapton and Stevie Winwood. Favorite writer is Ibsen, followed by Tolkien, Martin (GOT only), Bernard Cornwell, yourself and Michael Connelly.I have compared you to David Gemmel because of your twisty turny style and black humor. He and John Lutz (St Louis mystery writer) are
the only 2 writers, besides yourself, who have written more 5 books,
that I have had the inclination to pursue all works (short by 2 on
Bernard Cornwell by 2). You were a true joy to discover.....shu (sign off started in the 70s as a paralegal)
Glad to join this group. Loved Riyria series! Currently reading The Crown Tower and loving it. It is know 2:08 am in India and I think I will go on till 3 am..
Hi, my name is Cassiana and I'm from Brazil. I read Theft of Swords and loved it. Can't wait to read Rise of Empire :D
Hi, my name is Tammy and I love the Riyria books. Just started the Heir of Novron, and can't wait to see how it ends, also looking forward to reading the Riyria Chronicles!
Heir of Novron is my favorite of the group - especially the last one (Percepliquis). I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Hi... I am Nadya..I am from Pakistan. i love to read and write in fact I am writing articles and short stories as well. and written novel which is only the first book of the series. i really liked Theft of Swords and cant wait for the next. :)
Welcome! I always love to meet other writers. Short story writing, in my opinion, is so much harder than novels - so good for you!
Where can you go to ask a question regarding the Riyira Revelations? I just finished the Revelations and it was amazingly great, almost sad it's over, so I'm now reading the Chronicles. But I have just one question regarding Royce :)
Ask away...if Michael is not still followin (but I think he is) maybe one of us(readers/fans) will know the answer....shu
Well the book never explained how Degan ended up with the medallion and Royce an orphan (there was only a little explained). Did Degan's mother give Royce to an orphanage and give Degan the medallion? The only ones who knew how it all happened died, even Degan's sister knew. Did Esrahaddon and Arcadius know everything from the beginning and just let Royce live they way he did. I know it's just a book but I want to know more...lol. By the way I loved the ending!
The chronicles are set after the revelations. It goes into a lot of detail about the first empire and the medallion is from then. It does not go in very much detail about Royce's or Hadrian's childhood. That is why, on the "ask Michael" 3 or more people were asking for early tales of the two. There is a prequel right before Chronicles but it is on kindle. It was free and it gives a couple insights into characters in Chronicle. He also (Michael Sullivan) has a story in a "twist and turn" short story competition. You can pull up the book on Amazon. It is free or very cheap on Amazon kindle. Sorry I could not be more help but part of the magic of the stories is slowly finding out what makes the 2 of them click so well together. Michael has been reading the threads so he may have more to add on this....shu
@Tammy There's a special secret group "The Dark Room" on Goodreads for people who have read Michael J Sullivan's work that is specially made for spoiler-y type questions and discussions. If you email or message Michael, I think he invites you that way, or someone else in the group can request you to be added.@Frank This may just be a typo, but in just in case, the Chronicles are actually set before Revelations. From the rest of your post, I think you already knew that, but I don't want potential new people to be confused!
You are right... I muffed the series titles. I was thinking most recent is the oldest.... being too lazy to grab the books (all my Revelations are trade paper back & Chronicles I am going kindle) a word like Chronicles sound non prequel... so I mistakenly went with my gut. So, Tammy the first 6 books he published have the final answers but now in the new group of books it will fill in the rest of the clues to give the answers more meaning. "All will be revealed (maybe)"...Trust me the first 6 books (singularly or in the three 2 volume editions) are full of twists, turns, surprises and revelations...now I feel like karnak the magnificent on the Johnny Carson show....shu
@ Frank, yea I just finished the Revelations Nd they were amazing loved them. Just started The Crown Tower :)
@Frank, no I haven't read the book yet, but I do have it. I want to finish the Chronicles then I will read that book and also the Jester :)
A few weeks (?) before Revelations... so way after chronicles....nothing earth shattering in it but you will chuckle and say "that is where that character came from...great little short story...shu
"The Viscount and the Witch" takes place 11 years before Revelations. That would make it after "The Crown Tower". The timing is right for this to occur on their way back to Medford for the events of "The Rose and The Thorn" since they stay away from Medford for a year after "The Crown Tower" and "The Crown Tower" happens 12 years before Revelations.
Was there a timeline I missed or did viscount provide it?....once again I stand corrected. I guess over the years my memory has become a rusted steel trap... 《;¤}....shu
The intro blurb to "Viscount..." states the time frame. It also states that this story occurs before they were Riyria so that's why I place it before "The Rose and Thorn".I'll just have to impatiently wait another 9 days to know for sure...lol..."The Rose and Thorn" can not arrive on my kindle too soon :D!
Like I said...my memory has become like a gigantic brain fart, Lucinda. I guess I need to hedge my bets when I am discussing anything but Tolkien's LOTR. Having read it a dozen times I remember most everything but the poems. I sure was surprised by Sullivan's writing. Every book he writes keeps you clamoring for more...shu
I just realized that when I finish the Crown Tower (which so far is great, I'm loving it) there will only be one more book left and there will be no more Royce and Hadrian :(
Michael has said he plans to write one book for each year between Crown Tower and the beginning of Revelations so there will be more (provided we keep buying them).
So will 99.99995 of all that read one. Only grump butts will hesitate or anti half-elf or anti dwarf people...shu
Well, those grump butts and anti-elf and anti-dwarf people can go read Twilight or To kill a Mocking bird, something distinctly un-Riyria, as long as they don't diss it.
Anyone who disses Riyira does not appreciate real fantasy adventure with a little humor in it. Other than The Lord of the Rings, this has been the best set of books I've read in a long time, I'm even loving the prequels, the Chronicles. The I traction between Royce and Hadrian is so funny, to me. Royce acts like a spoiled child at times...lol
There are 4 other series of stories I put in LOTR and Sullivan's fantasy genre. David Gemmell's Waylander series (with his Druss series not far off), Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series (NOT the western sequel) and Martin's GOT. But....Tolkien and Gemmell passed, Martin only writes a GOT novel every 4 years and Sanderson has 5 or 6 series going at once. I would much rather have 1 book a year of every series they have. I have had to read Jordan's Wheel of time series 4 times just to remember what happened a decade ago in the earlier books. So...Sullivan is my new "bestie"...shu
Well, I've read the first book and part of the second book of the Wheel of Time. I really enjoyed the first but the second for me was slow going then I got distracted but the Riyira Revelations. Never read the GOT books but I love the HBO series, I've thought about reading the GOT books but not sure if they will be as interesting since I already know what is happening.
The books have a LOT of differences in GOT. For one thing really grisly things happen and Martin tells it like he thinks it. GOT is a great TV show because of the Dwarf and Arya, but John Snow has a bigger role. Also they give more info on the sea kingdom, the fight is huge at king's landing and they explain in detail what the raven is. Except for book 4 (which had characters that I did not like throughout) it was a quick read. Same with 3 and 4 up to about 9 on wheel of time. Book 2 of Wheel of time was like book 2 of LOTR. I read it years ago to my kids and they hated the page after page of running after Saruman's superorcs. We zoomed thru 3 though....shu
I tried reading The HObbit, but i just couldn't get into it. It was silly, which is good, but it was hard to see it as a book. More like a long pamphlet kind of. I wish we would get a new Riyria book a year after this. I'd be past the stars and beyond the moon.
But the Hobbit was a childen's book. Silly is a plus especially in the "Leave it to Beaver" age. I liked it as an introduction but then I first read it when I was 12 (mid sixties). Lord of the Rings is a pretty tough read for a kid as there are many complex issues that many young kids would have trouble understanding. At 14 I liked it but by 18 I adored it and at 61 I have read it a dozen times. The Hobbit I have read 3-4 times just as a refresher for topics that come up in LOTR. It was never a prequel or even a glimpse of what was to come. Only the description of Hobbits, Gandalf and the Ring bind the books....likely there would not be a huge fantasy following without it as Asimov, Farmer, Herbert, and the other scifi writers had great books (I read nearly all) but nothing like LOTR... shu
Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his kids right? I think the the new movie The Hobbit was done very well since its for adults and the book was for kids :)But even as an adult I love to listen to The Hobbit, but The Lord of the Rings was my favorite!
