I am only half way through the book, but I have to say the character of Septimus Warren Smith leaves a bad taste in my mouth from the beginning. His presence (I see his wife as part of his entity, someone to help complete his character) feels odd and out of place, like a 3-dimensional shadow in a vibrant world.
I am guessing since Clarissa's character's vague and slow to define, Septimus was created to enhance the Clarissa's "dark side"? LOL!
