Black

Struggling to get through this

I'm on page 125 of Black, Ted Dekker and I am STRUGGLING! Does this book get any better? I find myself getting bored at time, but I'm one of those, once I start a book, I want to finish it. Are books two and three better? I found this to be true of the Steig Larrson trilogy and was so glad I finished the trilogy.Black

I'm sorry you're having a hard time getting into this book, but I must say it is one of my very favorite novels of all time (way up there with the Chronicles of Narnia!), and I strongly encourage you to keep reading!
So far, I've read Black and Red; the 2nd book was even better than the 1st, but I think they're both brilliant. I'm excited to read White and Green soon!!

I loved Black! Thought it was brilliant! I put Red down due to getting into the heart of ongoing war. That kind of stuff I don't enjoy so much.
once you finish black, you'll never go back.. see what i did there? ahah

It took me a while to get through Black, I still feel like I wasted my time. I started the next book but could never finish it. Definitely not my favorite work of Dekker's.
I'm having trouble getting through the second book Red. What happened was i read Black and loved it then started reading the sub-series the Lost Books and got really bored with them and now i can't even get through the 3rd chapter of Red:(
I'm just starting Black and I already know I'm going to have to have Red as soon as I finish it. I'm listening to it on audio, and I'm wondering if I'll miss much if I get the abridged version of Red. The book swapping website I get my books through only has the abridged version of Red listed right now. I just don't know if I should go ahead and get it or try to find the unabridged version somewhere. Any advice?
DON'T GIVE UP YET!!!!!! The book gets so much better and has you aching to read the next book to see what happens!!! I had a hard time even starting this book because it was so slow and it was boring in a lot of area's, but it's so worth it to keep reading!!! Don't put it down just yet: I promise you'll like it :)
I had trouble reading it as well. I just could not get into it, but I really wanted to know what happened so I cheated. I checked out the audio at the library. I listened to it in the car to and from work. I found myself driving an extra block or two or sitting in the car a little longer, I even went out to my car at lunch just to listen. When I read it, it was boring, but when I listened I could not get enough. I know that doesn’t even make sense because I love to read. I have read (listened to) Black, Read, and White. I have Green (book) at home but I have not tried to read it yet.
I liked Black but think Red (book 2) is better. I am going to read White next then maybe Green. I like some of Dekker's books but some I have not read because just do not seem like something I would like.
I prefer to read Christian books by Frank Peretti who also co-authored a book with Dekker (House),

This was my first Ted Dekker read. I read it just this past summer and fell in love! I thought it was absolutely brilliant!
Darlene, this is the first Ted Dekker book I ever read and I fell totally in love with it! I'm not sure what to tell you if you're bored. I think it'll get better. Ted sometimes has lulls, but as soon as it gets bad it tends to pick up again. Keep plugging along and I think you'll be glad.
I forced myself to read Black, only because I don't like to start something then stop. Never read any of the other colors.
I loved this whole series! I did find this one a little tedious, but every series has to have a book that is filler/history and plot set ups.
The Circle Trilogy is one of my favorites written by Ted Dekker. Especially as you get into the series. I do agree that you need to read them in order and wish I would have realized that some of his characters interchange. By the time I realized it I had read so many I couldn't connect them all...I will say Thre3e is my other favorite of his. The last few books that he has written are not my favorite but I like Ted Dekker for his off the wall writing, to me they are never boring!
Though I'm a huge fan of this series, I must confess that I struggled with Black as well. Actually put it down, and picked up again a couple years later. Black is a lot of character and plot building, though I greatly enjoyed the scenes with Elyon. Red and White are even better, and wrap up the story very well. Hope that helps.
I loved this series! You should try it again... I got a little hung up in one of the books but the rest of the series made up for it. I'm also reading one of his other books, The Bride Collector.
I couldn't get through this book, I think I gave up around page 200.
I didn't mind the chapters that were in the real world but I just couldn't get into all the stuff with the other world, the great romance and all that.
I just found it a bit cheesy.

I loved the series...I read all of the them with my oldest son. The books need to be read in order (my opinion) black, red, white and then jump into showdown, saint and sinner then green to complete the series. It jumps around thru the characters so in this order you get to continue along with the main people and see how the books affected them all as a whole. I must admit I didn't read the Lost books-graphic novels.
I've read a lot of Dekker's books and would recommend most of them. Torie's list is pretty good, but I would add: Obsessed, Saint, Kiss, Blink, & The Martyr's Song Series.
On the other hand, I had a really hard time getting through Black and Red, but finished both because my brother loved them so much and thought I would too. I never even tried reading White and Green though because I didn't care to put that much time and effort into something I wasn't enjoying. I guess it just depends on who's reading them.

I actually enjoyed this series including Black(haven't read Green though). But I wouldn't recommend many of his other books. Bizarre. o_O
I really didn't like the series all that much and was really bored with Dekker's style about midway through Black. To me it was all action and no real substance and when I tried to look at the substance that was there, it all fell apart. I liked this style back in highschool but my taste has changed, I suppose -- and I don't mean to imply you have to be a teen to enjoy this style, I just mean that my tastes have changed. Plenty of my friends have read and recommended the series, but I'm with Darlene on this one. This series is a boring read I have to drag myself through for the sake of finishing the book I've started. I just couldn't get into the series. I stopped midway through Green and still have most of the Lost book series I was given for Christmas. But I just can't do it.
