Donna (donnahr) I'm about 75% through the book and am really enjoying it. I should finish it tonight and I'll post more tomorrow. Anybody else reading it at the moment?

Elie Harriett Don't have time to read-read it, so I'm re-listening to the Audible version. It is superbly acted, switching narrations between a male and a female narrator, depending on whose point of view the story is being told by at the moment. This is one of those rare audio performances where I actually picked up more fine points from the audio version than from the book version.

Have the book in hardcover and audio. I can't seem to bring myself to by it a third time on Kindle, which is why I have to use the audio version of the book on this go around.

Donna (donnahr) Here's my review:

"I didn't know what to expect from this book. I never read comic books growing up (except for the Archies) and have never been into superheroes. I have no idea how this book stacks up against other superhero books. All I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It reminded me very much of a VH1 Behind the Music episode. A couple of superheroes meet when they are young, gather some other members, form the Champions, and become stars, fighting crime and saving the world. Then comes the in-fighting and drama and marriages within the group and their eventual breakup. Fast forward a few years and the group comes back together for one last performance.

The chapters alternate in viewpoint between Fatale, the new, young member of the band group, brought in to replace the drummer one of the heroes who died in a drug overdose saving the world, and Dr. Impossible. Dr. Impossible is a super-villain, the smartest man on Earth who has been bested by the Champions a dozen times. He is back for one more try at world domination. He is quite a sympathetic character, rather lonely and down on his luck, who keeps plugging away at the villain thing, because, hey, what else are you gonna do?

The book was funny and entertaining and satirical without being mean, which is the way I like my satire. I can see a lot of people enjoying this who would normally never read a book about superheroes."

I know this book was a bit pricey on the Kindle but I'm really glad I bought it.

Donna (donnahr) Oh, I totally forgot to say that I couldn't get Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog out of my mind. If you haven't watched this, it was a web-based thing done by Joss Whedon a few years ago and it is bizarrely funny. Neil Patrick Harris plays Dr. Horrible so that's who I was picturing the entire time I was reading the book. I watched it on Hulu. Here's a link to info on it on wikipedia:

Charles (nogdog) Thanks for the review, Donna. I'm adding it to my wish list, but for now am resisting the $12 price tag. :-)

Donna (donnahr) I wish it was lendable. I hope the big publishers come around one of these years and that Amazon will allow more than one lend. Someday...

Or allow Amazon to discount books to $9.99 or less if they are willing to take the loss in profits. (Maybe something will come of the lawsuit against Apple and 5 of the Big 6 publishers some year.)

U.L. Harper (ulharper) I purchased "Invincible" for $1 from amazon. Shipped for a couple of bucks. Haven't read it yet. Just got it in the mail a few days ago. First few pages are pretty cool though.

Donna (donnahr) Well that's a much better deal! I am so into my Kindle I don't even look at the used paperback prices any more. I may need to rethink that...

message 10: by Elie (new)

Elie Harriett Just finished listening to it again. Picked up a few things I never got the first time. Favorite part is still when the author gets into the heads of the heroes while they are incarcerated and pulls out their REAL origin stories. I like how he humanized non-human (more or less) characters.

I so wish the author put out more, or would aloow others to put out more expansions on this universe. There's a lot to be explored there.

Trinity (snappingturtle) | 6 comments Just picked this up from the public library, my hold came in at the perfect time. But now I am intrigued by the idea of the Audible version - and those two credits sitting there waiting to be allocated this month...

It simply cost too much on Kindle. More than the paperback? Really, publishers?
