Hi - there is a book in French called "The Last Survivor in the Caravan" I think perhaps by Goyemide. Should be translatable to English by anyone decent in French, alas I am not.
'Foreign Words' by Vassilis Alexakis is perhaps worth a mention - about a man living in Greece (where it si largely set) who deals with his father's death by learning his native 'Sango' language and travelling to his father's home country of the Central African Republic....
