The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

I'm looking for some new authors to read, it's hard to describe what you expect from a book, but I'll try.

Story have to be puzzle, where I could think and find out what happend and who is "The bad guy" like in A. Christie books.

I like when author have a distance to his/her main character. That's probably the reason i don't like Conan Doyle.

What else...hmm...as I said I'm a fan of Christie, don't like Doyle (Holms is so perfect - I can't stand him and there is often no chance for guess). I like also a lot of Boris Akunin books.

if you want to go back...to mystery stories with good puzzles to solve, you might like John Dickson Carr who was a master creator of them.

he also wrote under the name of Carter Dickson.

also...some of the EARLY Ellery Queens, like Roman Hat Mystery, Dutch Shoe Mystery had brain twister plots.

Amy, I like James Rollins too. I'd recommend Sandstorm (since its the first of the Sigma Force books). but any James Rollins is really good.

I'd also recommend (for a change of pace) The List of SevenBy Mark Frost. It's a fast moving, fun, "young" sherlock Holmes thing.

Have you tried Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh and the Miss Pym, books? Elizabeth George writes Sayers -like police procedurals with strong characters and good plots with a message- try'Missing Joseph.'Priya vasudevan

You might like Patricia Highsmith or Cyril Hare.

You might try the Nero Wolfe series by Rex Stout. He's a genius detective like Sherlock but his sidekick Archie Goodwyn is no Watson. The books are narrated by the wisecracking Archie, who is constantly taking Wolfe down a peg. My favorites are Too Many Cooks, Some Buried Caesar and Murder by the Book.

Can I second John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson. I think his books are brilliant.

There is also a series of books by Clayton Rawson which feature an amateur detective called The Great Merlini, a master illusionist who owns a magic shop. The plots are complex and quirky. They are not too well known but they measure up well for the mystery lover.
