Local Novelist Azizi Abdullah Dies
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Popular novelist Azizi Abdullah, who was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit at Penang Hospital on Aug 11, died at the hospital this morning.
Utusan Pengguna assistant editor Mohd Ridzuan Mohamad, when contacted, said the condition of 69-year-old Azizi, who was warded since March and underwent heart surgery in April, had become unstable following a bacterial attack, diabetes and kidney problem and died at 7.50am today.
Azizi, a former Islamic Studies teacher, was known for his novel titled "Seorang Tua di Kaki Gunung" after it was made a compulsory literature text for Form Five students 20 years ago.
Mohd Ridzuan said Azizi's body was sent home in Taman Bersatu, Kulim, Kedah and is expected to be buried after Zohor prayers.
Upon retiring as a teacher, Azizi, besides actively writing novels and political satire, served as editor of Utusan Pengguna publised by the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP).
Two of his latest novels, 'Anak Belantera' and 'Badai Cinta', hit the shelves several months ago.
