Is Stem Cell Research an acceptable way of researching ways to save the lives of humans?

I've actually never heard any of the cons '-_- So obviously I am for it thus far, but my opinion is not at all strong :P

The only cons are a bunch of religious idiots not liking it because the cell "has potential for life" >.< I mean really... Every freaking time a women has a period the egg she's losing had a potential for life... It's so stupid. Stem cell research is highly beneficial to curing birth defects and many other diseases.

Oh, it's just religion? Fuck that then, I'm all for stem cell research :P

It's extremely helpful and flexible, plus it helps us move forward in research. Yeah, I believe a lot of the controversy happened due to people thinking that 'it had potential.' But Cody explains it pretty well ..

OMG I'M A MURDERER EVERY SINGLE MONTH!!!

Well, besides that, if people are willing to donate stem cells for research then who are other people to tell them they can't?

Nicki (nickirows) | 103 comments Totally support it. I'm missing a nerve in my right ear, which causes me to be completely deaf in that ear. The only thing that can fix it is stem cells.

But the government tells me I can't get my hearing fixed because the cell is a potential kid. Fine. I'll ask for hard-of-hearing benefits from the state instead. ;)

I feel bad for you Nicki, it's really ridiculous.

Oh something I found out kinda recently, one type of stem cell comes from already aborted fetuses, and due to it coming from (already dead fetuses mind you) people are against it because they're against abortion. I mean really though, it's to late at that point do you really want to stop more good coming from an abortion?

^agreed

Brigid ✩ I'm sorry about that, Nicki. Ugh.

And yes Cody, I agree. It's not like fetuses are purposefully being aborted for stem cell research. I think a lot of protestors can't seem to get that through their heads. The abortions already happened. And yes, it's sad, but at least this good and very important research can come out of it.

We're going over this in my Biotech class right now actually, and stem cells can be harvested in tons of ways: I think the best one is using leftover cells from in vitro clinics - they make hundreds or thousands of fertilized cells and dispose of the majority...those could be grown into stem cells, and I haven't heard of anyone opposing in vitro fertilization.
