: Before stating my opinion, I want to say that I know religion is a touchy subject for many people and what I say is not meant to offend anyone at all. I respect the fact that everyone has his or her own opinions on this subject. I personally am religious, so that is the mindset I had while reading this book. When Peekay is on the train with Big Hettie he meets Pik Botha the conductor. Pik Botha calls himself a born again Christian and he is completely pushy about his belief and very preachy about it. Big Hettie obviously does not appreciate his pushiness and I feel it makes her not like these "born again Christians". When Peekay is home with his mother in Barberton his mother tells him that Nanny was possessed by the devil because she will not take off her bracelets and that is why Nanny is gone. Now imagine how you would feel if one of the only people you loved and trusted was gone and your mother said it was Gods fault. That would make you strongly dislike God. Peekay clearly felt that way with his mother when he says "the lord is a s***head". Peekay, like many others, did not even have a chance to experiment with religion because he was so turned off by it at such a young age. So many Christians and other religions are pushy with to the point that it drives people away rather than pull them in. This hit home for me because I have second hand and personally experienced this.
